1316.0. "G.I.T. - Guitar Institute of Technology" by SNOFS1::HOOD () Wed May 24 1989 02:36

    Richard Hood
    Perth - Western Australia

I am considering attending Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood
California for 12 months commencing March '90. The Institute informs
me that my living expenses for 12 months (including shared apartment)
would be 6 to 7 thousand US dollars.

Is this a realistic figure for a student to support himself for
    12 months?

Does anyone know of someone who has attended GIT and can you give
me any further information regarding rental accommodation?

    thanks - Richard

    Richard,
You said "living expenses" would be $6k to $7k. Does that include
food? If so, $650/month for room and board in Hollywood sounds very
reasonable (not knowing the conditions under which you'd be living).
I know little about the GIT as well so my 2 cents is probably worth
less. I have heard, however, that you can't do much better than
the GIT for a REAL learning experience.

Yeah for a studio! I got to the LA area at least twice a year.
It is outrageous to live there. Not to mention the gangs...

    Mike,
Thanks for the info. It seems as though I could be in for an
    enlightening experience in Hollywood?

    Waaaaaait a minute...

GIT is right on Hollywood Blvd. I've been there at night several times
and never felt in danger. Of course I never got away from the heavily
populated areas and wasn't by myself at the time. Now there are parts
of LA that I WOULDN'T go to at night, but I didn't think it was that
bad around there. I've lived in several fairly large citys, so I
generally have a good feeling for dangerous places.

I guess it was about four years ago the last time I was there. Perhaps
    it's gotten worse since then.

Magic Mountain in Valencia (northwest of LA) is a major hangout
for gangs now. I went their about 6 years ago and thought it was
great (especially if you like rollercoasters :-)).

Local activity groups are canceling weekend trips to Magic Mountain
now for fear of the kids' safety.

    Richard,

I don't have much to offer as far as information on the GIT
except that my last instructor went there and he was great.

However, I was in L.A. a couple of months ago for the first time
and can offer this input on Hollywood. It isn't anything like the
pictures! In my humble opinion L.A. is a pit. If there are nice
sections they keep them well hidden. The fact you will be in L.A.
with a group of people you can hang around with and have something
in common with will help greatly and from what I hear the GIT training
    is intense.

If I had the chance to go to GIT despite my impressions of L.A.
I would still go, just watch your ass.

Good Luck, and remember L.A. is not representive of America it is
only what a small section of America has become.

As a former Angeleno and regular traveler to LA I thought I'd add some
    late comments.

The Hollywood area where GIT is located is no more or less safe than
any other urban/arts/academic area. It is comparable to Greenwich
Village in NY, West Philadelphia (where Penn is located), or the South
Side of Chicago near the U of C.

Recognize that most of LA is not pretty (that wouldn't be why you are
going) and that the values that bring people to LA are the opposite of
those that would bring people to either New Hampshire or Colorado.

Figure $600 a month to rent a student class one bedroom apartment,
share it with a roommate (someone sleeps in the living room) and GIT's
annual costs seem in line. Great fresh fruit and vegetables are quite
cheap out there and (if you don't air condition) utility costs are
nominal. Figure on owning/sharing a cheap car if you want to go
    anywhere.

Just another opinion, hope it helps.
