1278.0. "Chords...personality and emotion" by CLOSUS::GSMALLS (Hendrix lives!) Mon Apr 24 1989 13:45
I was listening to some old Gabor Szabo and was thinking about chords and the
emotion, moods or colors each conveys. I have always been curious about the
"personality" of chord types. For instance, minor chords have a
characteristice melancholy feeling to them. My question is threefold:
1. How would you describe the emotion or color associated with the following
chords -- major, minor, seventh, maj7, min7, sixth, ninth, eleventh,
thirteenth, etc. (feel free to limit yourself to the main chords in use or go
crazy and talk about your favorite chord)?
2. What tempo and meter do YOU like to use to further convey the associated
emotion?
3. What scales do YOU like to use to play over the chords mentioned above?

| Hi Gordon
re 1 difficult question as peoples choice of color can vary
as much as their choice of music, anyway I'll give it a shot.
Majors are demanding of attention,assertive. Minors are moody,
reflective. Sevenths are pivotal,create suspense. maj7,min7 are
like majors and minors but not as serious. I'll leave it there as
I don't have enough experience of the others (novice you see).
re 2 Slow blues.
re 3 Minor pentatonic (blues scale).

| The super best way to figure out the emotion the chord conveys is
to reach inside yourself when you play the chord and see what it
does to you.
Sound corny? Well, it works the best, so who cares? 8^)

1278.3 | Jimi's Moods and Chords | CLOSUS::GSMALLS | Hendrix lives! | Tue Apr 25 1989 13:33 | 24 |
| RE: 1278.2
No it isn't corny at all. My approach up to now has been instinctive.
I am especially interested in minor chords right now for some reason.
It probably has a lot to do with the mood I've been in over the
last few weeks.
A song that I have been listening to a lot lately has been "Little
Wing", by Jimi Hendrix. Sting did a remake of it about a year ago
with Hiram Bullock on guitar. Jimi was a master of using just the
right chord to convey his mood.
Anyone remember "Manic Depression" (Hendrix)? I heard that Yngwie
Malmsteen does a version of it. I'd love to hear more about the
chord flavor issue.
