1273.0. "Mitchell Amplification" by CSOA1::TEATER (Greg - I hear the universal language) Fri Apr 21 1989 20:46

I remember playing through an old (>10yrs) Mitchell amp.
It was the only one I have seen before. Great sound,
reminded a lot of a Boogie. This is was a combo, with 1
speaker (maybe 2), two position output power swicth, dual
channel, lots of balls. I have been unable to locate it
or another since, Anybody know anything about these
beasts? Where? How much? How reliable?

    	I tried a Mitchell 9-10 years ago,they were similiar
to a Boogie. They were also known for there speaker cabinets
which had sand in them for acoustic dampening. I heard they
went out of buisness as many small company's have. I remember
they weren't that much cheaper than Mesa Boogies, but you still
had to order from Mesa and it was at least a 6 month wait. I've
never seen anyone use them or even mention them till now.

    	<sob>... I owned a Mitchell Studio "Sandbox".... 30watt single
12 (I replaced the jensen with a JBL K120)... and this amp was (I
sold it.... dang) the absolute best amp I have ever played through
except for a Princeton Reverb years ago... Gawd, I wish I had that
amp back... (wish I had the Les Paul that I sold with it back too!).

There was a Mitchell Pro 100 sitting at Daddy's Nashua for ~$250
last time I was in there. I tried to play thru it but it was
in badly bruised and beaten shape. I've played with a mitchell
that worked once and it was a nice sounding amp....

Anyone know if these old Mitchell amps (that people were discussing earlier
in this note) were tube or solid state? I'm looking at a solid state on,
I have an appointment to see it on Tuesday. Just wondering.....

The other guitar player in my last band had two of 'em. I thought they were
ok for practice, but fell short of working out in live band situation. See,
my feeling was that he was a good enough player, so I even told him
about getting something more suited to his playing capability, like a Boogie.

I told him "hell dude, you play well enough, you're tryin to get some extra
$ playin in a band - why not just get what you deserve." My advice to you would
be the same. If your just dubbin away at home or at practice, the Mitchell is
fine. But if you think its gonna be the last amp you'll ever own, one that
you'll brag about, I doubt the Mitchell is it.

"sakman" - who recommended Boogies before he ever knew of a Fender "the Twin",
and has since become a major Fender dude.

Were they solid state, or tube?

Naw, its nothing like that. I've got a rack system that I usually use, and
some other stuff too. I just like collecting various decent amps for different
tones - I like all sortsa tones, and you never know what might hit you, or
inspire you for some reason.

The Mitchell is available pretty cheap (the speaker alone, a Celestion, is
probably almost worth what I'd be paying), so I was gonna check it out....

His Mitchells were solid state, I'm pretty sure.

By the way, the guy doesn't just happen to be Mark Fecteau does it? Mark
was the other guitar player in HEX.

	thru Lab Series L7's.....

Almost forgot to answer this! No, it wasn't Mark - it was a girl in Lynn
(it was in the Want Ads).

Turns out my car broke down this past weekend, so there went any spending
money I mighta had. Oh well, I really didn't *need* it anyways....

Definetly tube. It had, I believe, 4 6L6s with a power switch which I
assumed kicked two of the tubes in/out. Kick a** for sure.

Mitchell made some fairly decent "Boogie clones". We're talking
    Mk 1 here.

Mitchell was also known for the sand cabinet that actually had sand
embedded inside the walls of the speaker enclosure to reduce resonance.
I probably worked but I betcha it was heavy!

and I heard of the guy who bought one of those "sand" cabs and he ended
up selling it 'cause he couldn't get rid of the fiddler crabs.......

and the sound of surf crashing screwed up his tone.....

and if low tide hit right in the middle of a gig, the cab would get
real thin and he lost all his volume.....
