1271.0. "VINTAGE GIBSON SG'S VALUE?" by RAVEN1::DANDREA () Fri Apr 21 1989 12:57

    I STARTED TO ADD THIS TO VINTAGE GUITARS, BUT THE ACTIVITY HAS BEEN
    SLOW THERE SINCE 1986. I OWN A 60'S MODEL GIBSON SG SPECIAL. IT
    HAS THE SINGLE COIL PLASTIC COVERED (FAT) PICKUPS. I WOULD LIKE
    TO GET AN IDEA OF THE GUITAR'S VALUE. IT HAS BEEN REPAIRED AROUND
    THE NECK BODY JOINT RATHER SHABBILY, BUT IT PLAYS WELL. IT HAS THE
    ORIGINAL BRIDGE, NOT THE BIGSBY TAILPIECE, SO THERE IS NO INDIVIDUAL
    INTONATION ADJUSTMENT FOR EACH STRING. ANY IDEAS ON IT'S WORTH??

    Do the pickups mount thru the pick plate, or thru the wood?
    Tremolo tailpiece still intact? Original cherry finish?
    Original pickups and electronics?

    	The biggest factor in determing the value of your guitar
    	is the damage and the quality of the repair. I would say
    	that it's worth half what it would be worth if it was in
    	good original condition.

1271.3MORE ON SG...RAVEN1::DANDREAMon Apr 24 1989 17:166
    PICKUPS MOUNT THRU THE WOOD...PICKGUARD IS MISSING. NO TREMELO
    TAILPIECE, JUST A "WRAPAROUND" BRIDGE. WALNUT FINISH, NOT ORIGINAL.
    ORIGINAL PICKUPS AND ELECTRONICS. NECK WAS RE-GLUED, AND THEN
    RE-INFORCED WITH WOOD SCREWS COUNTERSUNK INTO THE CUTAWAYS PIERCING
    THE NECK SIDEWAYS. THE NEW JOINT IS VERY SOLID, BUT THE PUTTY COVERING
    THE ADDED SCREWS SHOW THRU THE FINISH A BIT.

    With the non-original finish and repairs, dealers would call this
    a "utility instrument. I'd agree with the previous reply about
    value--no "vintage" worth.

    And please, release the caps lock key. Those of us who haven't
    recovered from our vacation yet can't stand the shouting:-)

1271.5thanks for the input...RAVEN1::DANDREATue Apr 25 1989 13:547
    sorry about the noise, danny. i can't seem to get this straight.
    i got so much flack about writing in lower case, i switched to caps
    lock. i'm obviously too lazy to use lower case an capitalize properly,
    so this will have to do. thanks for the input, i guess i'll keep
    the sg.
