Would you care to explain the ADA-MP1 so that those who dont
own one can at least understand what the programs are doing? I spose
it'd be good for ADA too - they might sell a few more as a result!

1265.2 | a little info on the MP-1 and its accom. line | MARKER::BUCKLEY | I wish it was summertime all year! | Fri Apr 21 1989 10:58 | 27 |
| The MP-1 is a multiple preamp (hence MP [-1]) containing a solid state
preamp, a parallel preamp (fender/marshall), and a series preamp
(boogie, soldano stuff) in one unit. These preamps are switchable via
MIDI and feed into an active 4 band EQ, as well as a super (analog)
stereo chorus unit. The unit is fully programmable via MIDI, and
offers mapping utilities as well. This unit is too cool!! I have been
a Marshall fanatic for years, and played boogies, and I can get a
similar sound to a Marshall, a Boogie, a Jazz Chorus, a Rockman
(clean), an Fender twin, a music man, etc etc.
The MP-1 is part of a complete guitar system designed and marketed by
ADA. The other components in the system are:
o MIDI controller foot unit which runs the 128 programs from the floor.
o MIDIable stereo graphic eq eith 15 bands/side and 99 total programs
o MIDIable harmonizer
o Bipolar 100wpc solid state power amplifier
o all tube power amp
o Custom 2x12 cabinets housing Celestion speakers
Its a great system. I have bits n pieces of it, but eventually will
have the whole thing (minus the harmonizer...i like the IPS-33
better!).

I've got to buy something for use in my studio and am leaning
towards the GK250ML. (I really like the sound of that unit.)
But the GK is reputed to be a bit noisy...
Power-amp and cab aren't an issue to me, neither is the MIDI
controller. (I can generate patch changes from half a dozen sources.)
Does William J. recommend this unit for studio work?

|
RE: noise. There is a slight hum that emits from the tubes of the
unit...you can hear it when it powers up. I wouldn't say the unit is
`noisy' in the sense of the word. The GK does have a nice processed
sound...having owned the GK250ML/RL, and the ADA, I like the ADA tons
better than the GK. Why?
Flexility: With your choice of three preamps, active EQ, and stereo
chorus, and 128 programs...the sound possibilites are endless!!
ADA even throws in 1 software update free!
Sound: The GK offers you 4 sounds...clean and edgy from channel 1, and
more edge and distortion from channel 2. The sound is good for that
highly compressed, midrangy tom scholtz guitar sound. The ADA sounds
the most like a vintage fender tube amp...sweet, warm distortion thats
pleasant to the ears. The solid state section is great too. Sound for
sound, the ADA does clean, edge, and distortion better than the GK
does.
Go to whurlys and try em out side by side...that'll be the true test.
I know people who went out and bought the GK 2001 clp rack mount
preamp, and heard my ADA, and bummed out in a big way.
Also, as an FYI...the hot new guitar system that is popping up all over
the scene is an MP-1, a Quadraverb, and an IPS-33. Every guitarist I
have met in the last two months owns this setup!

Buck, I'm not sure I understand why the MIDI would make a difference
in the effects you created. Isn't it just for communications?
Does it insure that the sounds aren't modified by any of your other
units?
Also, would I be correct in assuming that having an SGE and the
MP-1 create too much duplication? Besides the IPS33 and a digital
delay, what else would you need to have the MP-1 rack system duplicate
everything that the SGE offers?
Thanks,
Mike

>Buck, I'm not sure I understand why the MIDI would make a difference

Yeah, it IS just for communications. That was just the way the
programs were set up by moi.
>Does it insure that the sounds aren't modified by any of your other
>units?
Basically, yeah.
>Also, would I be correct in assuming that having an SGE and the
>MP-1 create too much duplication? Besides the IPS33 and a digital

>everything that the SGE offers?
Hmmm, well, I guess to "duplicate" the abilities of thf SGE, you
would need an:
- Aural exiciter (BBE recommended)
- harmonizer (IPS is better than that offered by the SGE unit)
- digital unit that does stereo effects (delays, chorus, flanging)
I guess thats about it.
Since the MP-1 is reading MIDI info from the MC-1 foot controller,
you can set up programs in the MP-1 to vary MIDI information. So,
each program created can either be transmitting or not transmitting

Well, I never owned one! Greg lives in Colorado, and the unit was being
sold by someone in my building. So I bought it for Greg, checked itout, packed
it up, and send it on its way.
I believe that Les (the guy who sold it) did so strictly for financial
reasons, not because he was unhappy with it.
And I gotta say - after playing with it all weekend, I almost didn't send it
out - I was *very* impressed! Gotta keep my eyes open for another deal like

all of that stuff to sound just like Carlos.
With the MP1, I can imagine a time when Santana's, or anyone else's,
MP1 settings are a documented factory patch. Select x patch and you
sound like Carlos. Select the next patch and you either sound like
Neil Young or think that the MP1 is broken. 8-)

I do.
> ADA-MC1->ADA-MP1->ART-SGE .
I have the exact same setup. I have mine set up like this:
MC-1 -> MP-1 (to MIDI in)
MP-1 -> SGE (MIDI thru - MIDI in)
I have all the pieces in my MIDI setup on MIDI channel 14 because I used
to receive program changes from keyboard gear. Omni mode will receive
changes on any channel. I believe that all this equipment comes in omni
mode by default.
Since the MP-1 has less available presets, I chose to set the MIDI map on
the effects I'm using in the SGE to map to the program numbers in the MP-1
that I use.
An example: I press 51 on the MC-1 and this changes the MP-1 to patch 51.
I have set up the MIDI map in the SGE to select preset 143 when it receives
a patch change request for 51, so it changes to 143. This is done in the
MIDI utilities section of the SGE. It comes preinitialized so that it will
map the MIDI patch request to the same number (actually it works out to be
the next number since the patches are 1 ordinance and the patch change
requests are 0 ordinance, or something like that).
Basically to get the combination of efx and preamp sound you want you
either have to program the same patch numbers on both of the units, or use
the MIDI mapping in one or the other to redirect it to a different patch
number when you send a program change from the MC-1.
The MIDI maps on both the MP-1 and the SGE are pretty easy to change, so
the choice is yours. I chose to change the SGE because I tended to use the
same efx combinations with different preamp sounds, so it was easier for me
to set up. If you tend to use a lot of different efx with the same basic
preamp sound, then perhaps setting the MIDI map in the MP-1 would be better
for you.
One thing I found was that I had to use the MIDI map in the SGE to access
preset numbers higher then 128, since this is the highest program number
the MC-1 will send (and the highest number available in the MP-1). I like
to use the low numbers (where the factory presets, that I don't use, are in
the SGE if you don't modify them) and set the SGEs midi map to access
higher numbers (like 180) that the MC-1 can't access directly.
What kind of problems are you having? If you want to talk specifics feel
free to drop me a mail message (COOKIE::G_HOUSE) or give me a call (DTN

Last night I upgraded my Mp1 to "Release 2" of the Mp1 software.
The upgrade included some new "Dictionary" commands, a SYSEX dump
facility to allow dumps to PC's with MIDI interface and sequence
interfacing. I'll be playing around with some sequenced stuff
as soon as my new PC arrives, and I get a MIDI card for it.
Since I'll be doing some recording with it, and my MIDI drum machine
I hope to be dickering in real time QUICK!
Also in the upgrade chip are 69 new presets. I went thru these and
picked out some KILLERS ! These presets are WAY better than anything
I've been able to edit.
Greg, since you've been bummin' about your sound lately, I might
try convincing you to take these home and plug 'em into your Mp1
pronto... Maybe you should take the afternoon off. ;)
Seriously though, I put in two "crunch" presets I think you'll
like. Try 'em ! You'll like it. Also, there is one at the end that
sounds SO much like a Marshall 50wt half stack, if you closed your
eyes you'd think thats what you were playing thru.

DSP, for getting the Eric Johnson clean tone ... good luck !!! By the
way, the algorithm used is one for large room reverb, delay, chorus,
and EQ.

to a plexi-top, a twin, a boogie, a rockman, M1000 etel...
The trick to the Mp1 is to SATY AWAY from SS. Clean Tube is quite flexable and
dynamic. SS is good for those HUUUGGGEEEE "purty chords", but thats about
it imho. I be postin in at lunch.

Disclaimer - in my rig, I run a Hush IICX which is noise reduction with
a gate. It tends to clip the top of the signal off, so this may seem
really bright to those of y'all who don't have a NR unit. (Something
the Mp1 really needs :). Also, I run the master output really low so my
power amp is doing more work...You may need to bump the master up some also.

I'm interested in an MP1 for its distortion capabilities. Are they still
good units by 'todays' standards. Are they still being used ?
How could I use it in conjunction with my JCM 800 head ? Surley,
wouldn't two preamp stages totally 'fuzz out' the sound or is it
possible, or even worth, having a preamp bypass fitted to my
Marshall ?
Are the effects good enough in their own right - or do they sound best
used together with other processors (like my GSP).
Coop - I think you understand the tone I'm looking for - would an MP1
be a step in the right direction ?
Thanks for any help.

Well,
I spoke to my repair guy and he said he'd fit a preamp bypass + jack
for only 12!! It will give me the functionality of the Marshall and
the versitility of the MP1. He did offer to build me a basic but very
effective power amp (150 watt stereo) for a mere 100 + labour (about
150 which he has built before for use with MP1's and he says the tone
SMOKES (if used in conjunction with a noise gate).
Now to try the MP1 myself before he carves it up though.

| Tone,
I think the Mp1 is still a very viable choice, if your lookin' for "that
sound". "Everybody" has one in their rigs, and I hear them all over albums
that have been release recently.
I guess I'd run my Mp1 into the FX return of your Marhshall, unless it
doesn't have one - then I'd guess thats what your repair dood is gonna
do for ya.
BUT - IMHO, if you want the Mp1 to sound it's best, split your 4x12 into
stereo (or flip the switch or whatever), and get yourself a stereo power
amp.
I've heard a lot of other peoples Mp1s - and I think most of their rigs
were shite... and they get pissed off at the Mp1 cuz they didn't want to
spend the $$$ to implement them right (correctly).
The Mp1 is a high dollar stereo tube preamp with MIDI implementation.
You know what they say about "You systems only as good as your weakest
link" ? Well - there you have it. A good cab, and a good power amp is
a great start !!!
jc (who's had weak links in his system before...)
PS - naturally, this is all IMHO.
