Are there different categories? Or is it implicit that it's best ROCK
    guitarist in Boston?

Daddy's in shrewsbury won't have entry blanks until 13 nth or so,
    deadline has been xtended to 17nth. I'll throw my 2 minute tape in;
But if it's a talent contest forget it, I don't want any,
and if it's a Top 40 scouting party I don't have those either.

    I read the application and here's how it looks......You pay a 25
dollar entrance fee which buys you 2 min of the judges time,as well
as 5 min of set up time with your guitar and their amps. They judge
you on style, originality and difficulty of your "LEAD" guitar playing.

Basically their judging you chops and the top 25 (?) axe swingers
head to various clubs around Boston for a LICK off. The prizes from
    what I've heard include an Ovation,various amps....ect..ect.

Thanks, I entered. You only pay the entrance fee if you make it through
the first round. I's a good thing they have amps if I make it that far,
my marshall's in the shop and my 2.5 watt memphis ain't loud enough to
drown out the laughing. But it's easy to throw.

Great event last night at Club III for the first round of
preliminaries. Nineteen contestants kicked off the first round with
    some really outstanding performers.
( the expected 26 down to 19-20...because of the low count of entry
    tapes sent in )
I myself liked J.J. (Ziggy look alike ) who was the only contestant who
didn't play that 650 watt Rockman Building ;') but really did a
great number on an acoustic...quite an intence piece. ( kind of
    Mexican Classical like )
The other contestant that I thought ranked up there was the last,
who preferred the old clean fender sound...He just Jazzed it up killer!

But a great event it was.. the crowd was great, everyone had a
great time, and speaking with the people who were organizing these,
and future events ( Drum, Bass, Horns, ect competition ) seem to
be really optimistic about the direction this is going!

    Looking forward to the finals!

Who won last night??? I was there, but after hearing 25 guitarists
play...I was wiped out and left. There were some hot players, but
hard for me to determine who was `best'. i think the guy who played
a medley of american anthems was my pick for best guit player.

According to today's Globe, the winner played an acoustic set and
had short hair and glasses. There be a picture with Tom Sholz...

    RE: .15

Slight error in your note. He wore a dinner jacket, and had short hair
and glasses, however, he played an electric set. He had the choice of
his guitar as the first prize as well (a classical, an acoustic, and an
electric)...and he chose the classical one.

He had a good set. I was surprised. He screwed up two figures,
stopped, and started them over again...i guess the judges looked highly
on him getting it right then blowing over it. He played a Les Paul
Custom...and the finale of his electric solo was him play the foreplay
piece from Boston's first lp. He played the organ part with his left
hand and tapped the bass notes with his right.

Not my choice to win, but he was good.
1178.17What was the format of the "Best Guitarist" contestDREGS::BLICKSTEINConliberativeWed Apr 26 1989 18:546
What was the format of the contest?

Like, could you play anything you wanted? Did they play solo?
With a house band? With their own bands?

    	db
1178.18MARKER::BUCKLEYGood night LucyWed Apr 26 1989 21:1810
The format was simple...two minutes spent with an amp tech (Bobby
Cedro, formerly with the band Egypt) getting each guitarists
individual tone down from the Scholtz stack which they played thru.
Then they guitarts played a stand-alone solo for 3 minutes.
They were judged on style, composition, technical difficulty, stage
presence, and their ability to stay in the 3 minutes (maybe a few
    more things??)

There were all players from jazz to fusion to metal and blues.

    Re: 1954.last

Interesting news. Maybe DLR bottomed out and came crawling back to EVH
and apologized. There are questions to be answered if he returns:

    - what to do with Dave's hair?
    - what to do with Dave's physical appearance?
    - can they return to the pre-Hagar form when they ruled the HR world?
    - can EVH return to the brown sound?

    etc.
