I was listening to "Paradise City" by Guns 'N Roses (killer track)
and the guitarist seems to to be playing some sort of
descending/ascending scale right at the begining of the track.
Out of curiousity, could some one tell me what it is and enter it
?? Perleeese ???

Ok, the scale Slush is playin at the beggining of Mr. Brownstone
is an E pentatonic minor scale but he flirts with a major and a
minor 3rd so the scale has a more mixolydianish sound to it.
I don't have me guitar in my hands at the moment, but I'm pretty
sure its this:
E-------------------------------------------O-------------------
B---------------------3-2-O-----------------O-------------------
G-------------------2------3-2-O--------------------------------
D-----O-------------2-----------4-2-O---------------------------
A----2-2-O----------O-----------------2-------------------------
E-3-4-----3-2-O-3-4---------------------3-O---------------------
Paradise city on the other hand is a G major pentatonic scale,

Thanx Buck, now I can sound like my favourite guitarist...sigh..;-)
I've change the title of this note, as it seems that we didn't have
a topic to exchange solos, riffs and licks, but here it is!!
So...., there are a couple of riffs that I wouldn't mind knowing,
but I'm too damn lazy to sit down and try and work them out (well,
actually thats not true, I've been trying to suss out the second
riff for a day or so, and am having very little luck).
a) Sweet Child 'O Mine - by GnR's very own Slush
b) Still of the Night - By Whitesnake (riff was played originally
by John Sykes).

| re: -1
To me, harmonic minor is a tricky scale to sound correctly in a minor
context. I usually find that if I stick to the harmonic minor chord
scale, things are fine. If you were playing in A minor, the chords for
that scale would be the following:
A min B dim C aug D min E maj F maj G# dim
1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7
These are built on triads, of course.
C aug is a weird chord for rock, but if you think about it, its like
Ab in first inversion using `rock' fingerings (ie 2 & 3 note clusters).

Do you remember the time you visited the local music shop, probably
on a saturday morning, the usual 'muso" clan is there, and the guy

probably goes across all the strings and spans 8 frets or more.
You got it down some time ago, and probably use it when tuning up
at gigs, testing out guitars for feel, getting your chops in etc....
Well, just in case I don't get to hear you at the local store and
rush over asking how you did it, share it in this NOTE...please !!
Thanks in advance,

I was fiddling with 12 bar blues amd I started fumbling around
with this run. I use it as a warm-up exersice too, but its quite
a cool run.
The notes that are spaced ( eg ---O-O-4-4--- are played with a
'funky/bluesy' feel, whilst the other notes like ---1410-- (ie
NOT spaced) should be played much much faster, with a much
smoother feel. The fast bits need strict alternate picking, but
do what you want with the others.

RE: -1
Yes, those are fingers, and the only finger that is stationary is
finger 1. Fingers 3 AND 1 move alterativly...it helps keep the notes
staccato..if you held finger #2 its would sustain after picking and
sound messy. Dave Clark uses That fingering I described...and he plays
licks like that really well...I don't feel comfortable personally with
that fingering, but then again I usually don't play licks like that. I
would use my first finger for the 8th fret and either an alternating
3rd or 4th finger for the 11th fret notes. Probably would be the 4th
finger becuase it is stronger on my hand then my 3rd finger is.
Ok, now everyone play fast!

| If you think about it, you might find that the third finger is quite
often the weakest. Try this exercise:
Place each of your fingers on consecutive frets (e.g. index
on 4th, middle on 5th, ring on 6th, and little on 7th);
Decide which two fingers you want to work on first (let's say
middle and ring fingers);
Now lift your middle finger off the fretboard (but leave all
the others down);
The *instant* you drop your middle finger back to the fret,
pull your ring finger off the fretboard.
Repeat this with all combinations of fingers. Start out slow
and work on building speed. It's a good exercise when you're away
from your guitar too. I found that my third finger was my weakest
too.

I'd use a standard crosspicking methodology;i.e., use alternate

but in the long run will give great results in clean pickin'.

I'm really struggling with the following lick from Comfortably
Numb (am I leaving my self open here, or what?): When he enters
the solo he hits a quick stroke with three muted notes and one regular,
I've tried the following two ways:
Way one Way two
e 14 14
b x(11) x(16)
g x(11) x(16)
d x(11) x(16)
a
e
Way one works (the sweep is muted until the f#) but the next
part of the lead requires that I get my but up to bend the f# and
I'm not fast enough to get there....... I can't even get the f#
to sound with way 2.... Is there a "way" that I'm missing???
Later in this solo he does a muted sweep that is even more
difficult (for me at least) than this one where he sweeps three
muted notes to a pull off, like this:
P
---
e 15 14
b x(?) 16 14 etc. etc.
g x(?)
d x(?)
a
e
How the heck is he doing that.. I chose to learn this solo cos
it's really sweet (not like me) and slow (very much like me) but
this little sweep (he only does it 3 times) is driving me nuts!!!

sustain (knocked me right out).....

I suppose there's no accounting for taste, but I love this lick,
what I don't understand is why it sounds so different to me... On the
surface it looks like a postion in the Cm pentatonic scale and pretty
straight forward.... BUT... the chord that sounds like it matches
behind the lick is Ebmaj and the guitarist spends a lot of time on Eb
(16th fret on Mr. B string).. howcum?? Is this really Cm pentatonic or
is it Ebmaj (my guess is Ebmaj) how come it sounds so, heck I don't
know how to describe it, coooool, I guess, over Cmaj. Am I missing
something here????

What are some of the riffs you first learned? (please use the tab

Hmm....
Well Mike, when I was starting off I was really into playing some crunchy rock
rhythm stuff, so I learnt this bit from Ozzys Tribute album. Its the intro to
"Steal away the night" and has everything you'd ever want from a b*lls to the
wall rock riff. I used to (and still do) love playing this.

I've been liking this one in a major key....
Usually I'd do the slide like this say in Gmaj:
e
b 13/ 15
g 14/ 16
d
a
e
But lately I've been bending them instead, kind of sounds like a
car horn:
B
e ___
b 13 15
g 14 16
d
a
I do the same thing with minor pentatonic scales and following with
Chuck Berry's minor third to third hammer on.

| With my Telecaster, Fender Twin, and Rat pedal, how can I get

I don't want it to be "real" distorted sounding either.
can it be done?

| I already have a graphic. I guess I should ask the question:
Does anybody in this file use deliberate, controlled feedback?
I'm sure there are some who do. Is it the type of thing where
everybody's setup is gonna be different and you just have to
experiment?
What I'm trying to get at (specifically) is this:
In the song "Metropolis" by The Church, there's a "solo" of
sorts where the guitar hits this open-sounding E chord and
then a couple of seconds later this feedback starts up that
sounds like an A played on the G string second fret (kind of
a suspended 4th type of effect). I want to play this, but
haven't had much luck so far. Maybe the single coils on the
Tele just can't hack it? I've tried cranking the Twin, but
I don't want the excessive volume. I've tried dorking with
the gain and distortion levels on the Rat, but haven't had
much success that way either. What's a mother to do?

I think it's the OS-2 or something (that has to be the wrong pedal)

starts off the feedback from what ever chord/note you are playing...

1080.40 | 1. Crank up the midrange | SMURF::BENNETT | We are Anta's Selves | Fri May 18 1990 14:22 | 13 |
|
Then:
Play your E chord
and:
slide the Ab from the E chord up to an A (this is on the G string)
while *gently* pulling off the A string and leave the A string open.
If there's enough air moving in the room you'll get yer feedback.
A little bit of fingergrease on that upper A will probably help.
It's a lot easier than it sounds from my description.

| Two thoughts:
1) If you're gonna do it with EQ, you'd be much better off with
a parametric than a graphic
2) You might try doing this with an artificial harmonic of some
sort (you might have to bend it because there's no strong
harmonic for A in the E major chord).

proper way to refer to those notes in the IV and V as they relate to

as they relate to the keys of D and E, right???
