1041.0. "the new Fender Super 60 amp" by CRONIC::PCUMMINGS () Tue Dec 27 1988 13:18

I just tried the new Fender Super 60 amp this past weekend and was
pretty impressed with this little amp. Seems like a pretty decent
amp for the $. It seems the next size up in Fender tube amps is
'The Twinn' for almost 2 x the price (and weight). Anybody have
any comments or experiences with this one?....

    thanx,

I've been waiting for this one . . . how much money?
Is it all tube electronics? What is the speaker configuration?
Is it available as a head only? Whats it got for controls?

And of course, where did you try it out?

Most people are asking 499 without any talking although I got a
few places to agree to 475 (Norfolk County, PU Wurlitzer, etc).
Shortly after, LaSalle told me 420 but were out of stock. not sure
if they were pullimg my leg or not.

    Anyway - features: 1 12" Eminence speaker 60W Rms small but/52 lbs.
Channel Switching (2 channels) 1 EQ section - bass, treble, middle
presence, reverb (works for both channels). channel 2 has gain
AND master (this is the hotter of the two channels).
Line Out, 8 (or 4 I think) Ohm Ext. Speaker jack, Pre-Amp in, Pre-Amp
    out.

    As far as I can tell it's all tube. (2) 6l6 (3) 12A*7 tubes.
    Great sounding (and very loud).

The one I tried did consistently make a "swish" type sound when
powering down. Don't know if there may be a solid state element
that might cause this or what. A friend of did not think it was
    much to worry about.

Well, I bought one! it's a great little amp - versatile enuff for
my use. And yes it does come in Head-only and Rack-Mount versions
    too.

Congrats. I have one of the new Twins, plus a 1978 silver-faced
twin. The reverb is much better in the new Twin, as well as being
    assignable to either/both channels.

Does the super sixty presence control feature a pull-out notch filter.
How about the tone controls, do they feature pull-boost/cut functions.
How about the effects loop, does it have a switch for differant
levels. The Twin has 3 levels ranging from instrument level effects
    to line level effects.

The super sixty sounds like a great alternative to a Mesa Boogie
    for about 1/2 the price.

    Enjoy !!

1041.5Fender/SunnANT::JACQUESWed Jan 04 1989 08:319
One other tidbit. It is my understanding that Fender bought the
old Sunn company, and is now building all Fender Tube amps in the
Sunn factory, as well as Sunn PA systems. The Fender transistorized
amps are all made in Japan, but the tube amps are Made in USA.

There may be some transistorized amps that come close to sounding
like tubes, but nothing beats the real thing for that sweet sound.

    Mark
1041.6not all of that...CRONIC::PCUMMINGSThu Jan 05 1989 17:2914
Unfortunately, the Super 60 does not have the Pull boost/cut tone
controls like on The Twin, but it's pretty nice the way it is.
It also has pre-set levels for the effect-loop in/out (actually
it's labeled pre-amp in/out), but is supposed to be setup for
to work well with either stomp-box or rack mount effects.

I have a feeling Fender did not want to put The Twin out-of-business
by putting ALL the good stuff mentioned above in the lower priced
amp (wound up paying 420 for it! heck of a deal)... as opposed to
almost 900 for The Twin. If I had the money (and the muscles)
i might have gone for The Twin. Still the Super 60 weighs 52 lbs.!

I've had mine for almost 2 weeks now and I'll agree with Paul, it's
an awesome amp, I love it. It immediately made my blues sound better
with really warm fat (one at a time.. you know what I mean, right)
tones on the clean channel and killer almost/distortion on the lead
channel... and this is with single coils... old ones... I'd like to
see a little more punch on the clean channel, though.. anyone have any
cool settings they'd like to share?? Here are the ones I'm using...

They got 'em for $425 cash & carry at Music Workshop in sales-tax-free
Salem NH. This place is on Broadway (28) across the street & 200 yards
	north of Daddy's.

It isn't a Twin but it isn't that expensive either. I love this baby.
I've been frobbing around with all kinds of settings. The clean
channel is about all I can handle considering I'm using a Rick
	solidbody and it's twang-city.

I'll write in some of my favorite settings in a week or two. I
	enjoy channel 2 set up:

Vol	Drive	Vol	Treb	Mid	Bass	Rev	Pres
	X	4	2	7	0	4	2	8

Makes for a good hazy punk tone.

There are some amazing blues tones I've gotten using the SG into
this amp. I've also hung a 20wt peavey off a delay connected to
pre-amp out and filled out the room nicely.

I've got lots of things I wanna try. I'll take notes and get
	back to y'all.

I ran the Rick Bass thru it last night and it sounds unreal on that
	clean channel.

Oooheee! Now to sell off some stuff and get some more speakers!

Now that the kitty note's slowing down some of the other good
buys can resurface. Like I said I'd do in a prior note, here
are a couple of settings I really enjoy:

Syd Barrett tone for Astronomie Dominie and Lucifer Sam:

	Clean Channel

vol	drive	vol	treb	mid	bass	reverb	presence
	2+	X	X	9	0	3	3	5

And a warm light "brown" tone for blues & C7-shaped chords:

	Drive Channel

vol	drive	vol	treb	mid	bass	reverb	presence
	X	5	2+	7	4	5	2	7+

I've been really enjoying this amplifier. There's a lot of tonal
flexibility here. I can't wait to hear that this thing will do
	with an external speaker cab.

I've heard the following two rumors regarding factory mods for the
    super 60...

Rumor 1: fender left out a bias pot at the factory on some earlier
models and it's now a free dealer upgrade.. which of course would
    include aligning the amp, right?

Rumor 2: Based on customer feedback, Fender will be offering an
upgrade that will provide more volume on the clean channel (hell I
can't turn mine much past 4 anyway)

    	Anybody heard either of these...

Nice settings... I like the second one.... here's mine for Robert Cray

Nice rumors. I've heard nothing. I don't know about yours but the
clean channel up loud puts the speaker thru a major workout.

Steve Jones like Sex Pistols Steve Jones?

I'll try out that setting. The second one I listed is pretty much
where I like to play. At louder volumes it breathes well.

I like a tone that's like the wind that blows on the last day
when the bombs go off and the raid sirens are playing mournful
	tritones.

Breathe is probably not the right word, but I'm talking about
when the tone has a very vocal tone like Janis Joplin's voice.
Almost singing but with more crankiness and sound pressure and
the speakers get into it like bellows fanning a fire. Like you
can feel the air moving when you're playing, but "breathe" is
when you can feel the air stop. It's this phenomenon why I'm
looking forward to playing around with closed cabs.
1041.14No Fender Mods...DNEAST::GREVE_STEVEWest down Ventura boulevard...Tue Jun 19 1990 10:3126

Hmmmmm.. here's some new information directly from Fender. There
is NOT a bias pot, or channel one volume modification available from
Fender. It's been so much fun waiting for the past four months for my
dealer to get this info. They are or will be introducing two new
combos.. a single 12 and a double 12, to solve the volume problem on
the clean channel... BUT they'll distort earlier (life is filled with
compromises)... So I guess what I'm going to do to make mine louder is
find a crystal clear guitar amp, transistor I guess, cos they're
cheaper and slave it to my 60... That way I won't sacrifice loudness
(yeah, I know I'm still playing in my bedroom, but I do love the sound
my dog makes when I crank it) and I'll keep that sqeaky clean sound,
that's so great for metal playing [;^)

What do you folks think??? Is there4 any argument for me finding a
straight power amp (I really want Stevie's concert and a boogie cab)
and a speaker cab??? The reason I'm not opting for that road is I'd
lose th redundantcy and variety that I'd get with a backup amp...
    help?

And... before you folks get a chance to answer those questions,
I've got some more. My local music store offered to let me try out a
CRATE 120-c and I found that the Line ot from my 60 plugged into the
lines in (stereo amp) made the CRATE too loud.... AND that the preamp
out made the CRATE too soft.... I don't really want to use the pre-amp
out because the line out sounds so much more cool (I'm not sure I know
why).... Anyway, I built a box tonight that patches my line out
(super) to the CRATE's lines in through a one meg linear taper pot that
I had lying around (from another failed electronic project.. grin) and
it works great for balancing the loudness on the CRATE and my super 60
sounds like a super 100 (thanks Chuck) or so when I crank it up and no
    distortion... Here's the new questions:

    a. am I doing any subtle damage to either amp by using this pot to
regulate the level of the line out from my super??

    b. Preamp out from my super sounds pretty good when I go straight into
the regular or -6db input of the CRATE.. howcum, I thought that it
should be distorted as hell... it would really be fun to be able to use
the CRATE preamp and chorus and all that good stuff as well as the
power amp section. (the CRATE by itself sounds a little sterile)

    c. Could I use my little level box to control line out from the super
to the regular input on the CRATE without hurting either amp... and
would I expect to be able to get a crystal clear tone doing that???

If it sounds like I don't know what I'm doing!! It should!!! I
    don't!!! HELP!!

BTW.. my music store offered to sell me this 120c or whatever, are
    there any opinions out there..??

    Steve

Well I'm not sure of the model, but just the other day I was foolin
with a Crate. 130 watts combo amp with a single twelve. It was a
transistor amp that caused me to notice how far they've come with
transistors since I had a Kustom back in '69. I really liked the amp,
in fact were I not a major Fender dude these days, I might have bought
it. As it turned out, I saw the Fender "the Twin" and the Crate lost
out. The Crate was a lot less expensive, but I doubt I would've been
bitched out any less by my lady when I broke the news.

1041.17Crank it up!COOKIE::G_HOUSENo, I'm very, very shy.Tue Jun 26 1990 16:2420
    Steve,

I don't know much about what you're doing, so I can't make an comments
there. You might find it less expensive to buy a cheap used power amp
and a 1x12 cab then another amp.

Regarding the Crate, I think they make good stuff. I got one of the
first ones after they dropped the wooden cases and started adding a
    lot of distortion. Mine's a CR160GT which is a 60 watt 1x12 combo.
I've had it for about 6-7 years now and it's never had a single
problem. I haven't used it much the last couple of years though. It's
got an absolutely killer distortion sound, but I got tired of it. The
price was right when I got it too. No complaints at all. If I were in
that kind of market again, I'd consider another Crate.

On the volume thing, I say crank it up and let it distort a little!
    8^)

Thanks, Greg, yer gonna laugh... I actually asked a Fender
technician what siz pot to use for controlling the line out signal from
my super and he said 10k.... I gulped but followed his instructions
and created the collest little tremolo device I've ever heard.. strum a
chord or note and by the time it got to the Crate's power amp it was
breaking up so bad that it sounded like tremolo... Anyhow my pal dbii
confirmed for me that the pot was a little too small and I replaced
them with 1meg pots last night and things work great.

What I'm doing is plugging the line out from my super into the
lines in (stereo) to the power section of this 120 watt crate amp that
I guess I've bought.. (grin)... I'm using the two pots to control the
level so that I can balance the volume between the Crate and the
    Fender.

Hmmm... wonder what would happen if I used one of the Crate's 12s
as an extension speaker, and drove just one side of the power amp..
right now I have "licked" the super 60 volume problem.. the extra 120
watt from the Crate delivers crystal clear high volume for my Albert
King stuff.. and distorts just right for the Clapton, Healey, SRV
stuff. S'matter of fact it doesn't need to be as loud as it is!! If I
used half the CRATE, I'd have a cool extension speaker for my 60, a
cool 30 watt power amp for getting the volume, and a backup 30 watt
power amp (the other channel on the CRATE)..

Can you believe that the Fender Dude gave me the wrong poop???

I'm having a dilemma with my super 60... maybe you guys can think
of something that'll help me out.

The band I'm playing in does oldies covers. I've been playing my
strat through the overdrive channel normally with the gain control
cranked up until I just start to get a little bit of distortion.
This in combination with flooring the mid control has given me a
sound I really adore. I haven't had any need for heavy distortion...
    so far.

Now we're getting into a later class of tunes and I need the kind
of distorted sound I get when I turn the gain up to about 5 or 6.
The obvious problem now is that I can't seem to get that "just starting
to distort" sound from the clean channel... it's too clean!

Am I going to have to buy an external box to solve this problem
(e.g., leave the setting as before and get a a Rat or something
for the heavy distortion)? What are my options here?

figure out anything better. I don't play out though, so maybe some of
the pros could help you more...

Now I want to ask my question:

Assuming that I don't do something stupid and trade for a "THA

    like to know.....

7 depending on the general volume, treble on 7 and presence variable
between 7 and 10 depending on the age of my strings. I basically gave
up on the clean channel... I'm addicted to the slight crunch with the
gain on about 3. Bought myself an external pedal for distortion.

I bought a SUPER 60 this past week and am quite pleased with it. As
mentioned in some of the previous notes, the NORMAL channel is a little
shy in the volume department. I hooked up a Marshall 4 x 12 and got a
wonderful full sound. I love the tone generated from this amp. It
kind of sounds like a Musicman 65 Watt, 2 X 10 that I had years ago.
Beautiful amp and full of nice surprises. It was a wee bit more
expensive to buy up here in Canada, but I needed one in a hurry soo....

Welcome to the club. Compact little amp with some very tasty
tones. I run mine with an extra 12 (Carvin HE12) for house practice
and I could hardly ask for more.

	Have fun...

I sat in with a band to do a couple blues standards the other night and
plugged into one of these Super 60 amps and was fairly well impressed.
Although I didn't have much of an opportunity to tweek it for my old
stratocaster (the guitar player was usinga Hamer), I could tell that it
had a lot of range to it. It struck me as a great amp for doing smallish
rooms and for a wide range of cover material. If I was playing in a
cover band regularly, I'd look into this unit. Something tells me that
    Fender stopped manufacturing them. True?

I have one of those puppies. Last I looked they were still makin' em.
There's *5* flavors available:

	Super 60 1x12 combo
Super 112 1x12 combo (adds bright switch & better cab geometry)
	Super 2x10 combo (like 112 with 2 x 10 instead of 1x12)
	Super 60 Head
	Super 60 Rack mount head

I get wicked GTS and ponder selling it once in a while. Then I invite
another player to my house and after they flip over it for a while I
change my mind. They're a common item in the used market for just
over 3 bills. If you get one, get an extra cab.

Yep Charlie, I know what you mean about thinking about getting rid of
your amp only to change your mind. When we met, I didn't have my Fender
"the Twin". Since getting it, I've written about it many times in here.
    I can't think of
a better amp (excluding Dumble's, Rivera's and other $$$ exotic stuff).
I've thought about selling mine only cause it's overkill for what I'm
doing with it (home use). But then I get to cranking on it and I get
reconvinced that I should never part with it. It's me!

Sakman... ultimate lyrics!! I laughed, I cried... Mister,
    you've got a clue.. big time... [;^)

I had a different experience with my super 60.. loved it in the store,
but found that the two channels had a serious volume difference, and
that it was all but impossible to roll off any mid-range on the clean
side of the house (yeah, I know.. some of you are saying.. "But you
*WANT* mid-range in your tone.. Gree Vee Bonehead!"....) Call me crazy
the super 60 just didn't happen for me.. I sold mine and got an older
deluxe reverb and I've been absolutely satisfied with my tone since...

Not only that, but listen to this my fellow tone bros... I checked out
a super 112... same as my super 60 cept' it's in a deluxe sized cabinet
and *IT* sounded great... I'm beginning to think that it had something
to do with the little bitty cab they built the super 60 into... who
    knows sure not me...

OK let's think of words that rhyme with "duck".... I got one! I got
    one!

Yo Stevie, help me out bud. If your Super 60 had two channels then did
it not have independent volume control for each channel? Seems to me
that it does. Then what the hell, how can you *not* set the volume to
balance whatever way you want? Little confused here.

I demoed a Super 60 and a Super 112 side by side in a store and
    preferred the 112, too.

FWIW, I didn't buy either. Instead, I bought a '68 Deluxe Reverb and
    a realtube overdrive unit.

If I played out and needed the volume, I'd seriously look at a Super
    112. I also have a hankering for the vibroverb re-issue, however.
And used twins can be found pretty cheap (but we all know those things
    way a ton).

I'm not sure what Steve ment about the Super 60, but I played a 2
channel amp once that had a similar problem. You'd set the clean
channel on 10 and the distortion channel about 1 and they'd be the same
volume. The lead channel wouldn't be turned up enough to sound right
yet and by the time you got it past it's little dog leg where it
sounded good (around 3 I think), the clean channel was left like a
whisper in volume. Don't know if it was broken or what, but it wasn't
    very useful.

1041.39My ExperienceSALEM::MADDENTue Oct 22 1991 10:1211
My experience with the Super is the same as Steve's. I find the lead
channel much louder than the clean channel. The lead channel which has
a really nice distortion doesn't sound good until the volume level on
that channel is about 4-5. To get a comparable clean volume I need a
volume level of about 9. Typically the size of the room I'm playing in
doesn't lend itself to the volume necessary to get a nice sound from
the lead channel so I've resigned myself to using the clean channel
almost exclusively. In general, however, I'm happy with the Super 60
although a voice inside me keeps saying Vibroverb Reissue.

Yeah, that's pretty much the deal (or was for me).. the clean
channel didn't have enough at 8 and the lead channel had tooo much at
    2. Frankly... the clean channel tone at lower volumes was absolutely
killer! I loved it, even if it was a little mid-rangy.. Funny how I
wound up deciding on a deluxe... If I needed more power or volume now,
I'd get *ANOTHER* Deluxe (huh, Rosty?)
