I have the ability to pickup a Hiwatt 30 "Sterling Silver Import" head for a fairly low price (under 300$). The head's in perfect shape and it sounds infinitely better than the Marshall JCM800 50w combo I now own. I would like some information on Hiwatts "Sterling Silver Import" series of amplifiers. I am primarily concerned with the 30w heads. If anyone has ever owned one or if you know someone who has please let me know what you think of them. any and all opinions will be appreciated. Common you equipment gurus.....show me some of that knowledge that has made this file so good Thanks in advance Brian

Hi Bri, I owned one of these heads for over a year. It was really nice and as you said worlds above a Marshall JCM800 head sound wise! I only sold it cuz I didn't want that chainsaw sound anymore. The head is actually something like 43 watts RMS if you scope it out. It has 3 7025 preamp tubes plus the phase splitter tube, and 4 el34 output tubes. A friend of mine replaced his el34's with el84's (from Groove Tubes) to get more of an english sound from it. The eq is kinda nice...a LOT more active than a Marshall eq, so watch out. I believe the freq. centers were 120hz (bass), 700hz (mid), 5K (treb). Presc. was listed as (above 5K...whatever that meant?). I found that running the preamp volume at `8 1/2' sounded better than pushing it to 10 like on a Marshall. For under $300 I'd say but it! Buck |
