965.5 | Bedrock 4x10 Combo | SQUID::GOODWIN | | Wed May 24 1989 15:33 | 20 |
| I recently test drove the Bedrock 4x10 50 watt combo amp.
Thought I'd provide a few details about it.
Controls were volume w/ pull mid boost, master, treble, middle,
bass, presence, reverb.
Power tubes are 2 6ca7's. Speakers are 4 celestion g10s50's.
The amp has a nice overall sound and is quite loud.
IMO, it's very Marshall-like. I had hoped that the 4x10
open back configuration would provide something like a
Fender Super Reverb sound - it doesn't. But that's just
my preference. One thing I didn't like was that onset
of distortion occured at volume level 2 (and up). There
was not much 'clean' headroom at all. Price seemed to
me to be a bit high - $965.00. I wasn't interested in
buying it, so I didn't haggle at all. I don't know if
it's available for less elsewhere, or if Hamel Music in
Chelmsford would be flexible on price.

Bedrock seems to finally be trying to go for the big time. You may
have seen their recent ad campaign with Earl "I'll endorse anything" Slick
and now they have gotten a complimentary review from GP's David Hicks
for their 1202 model (2-12 50 watt combo).
Hicks says the amp has that "vintage" sound by going for a
low-gain preamp and getting the dirt from the power stage instead.
Tubes are EL34s, speakers by Celestion. List price....$1295. Does
this sound somewhat familiar (see note #1361 on THD amps)?

NO THANK YOU! What s*cked about the MP-1 is I'd spend HOURS in my
basement making/perfecting patches for this, that, and the other thing.
Then I'd get to a gig, in a funky hall with lousy acoustics, and I'd be
editing ptches at SOUNDCHECK!! Bleck...or, even mid set! Try
programming a quadraverb AND Mp-1 bettwen tunes (believe me, it's an
art!). If people wanna do that, or hire someone to do it for em...all
the more power to em.
For me, I like having 8 knobs and no more to 'fool' with on my
Marshall...need more presense...ya turn the knob...not "press edit,
press pres, pres up, ooops, too far, press down, press store twice"
You can HAVE it!

I thought his tone was excellent. It was tight as a drum and punchy.
I think a lot of that can be attributed to his style, and his axe (a

Hey Pat - I thought there was a Bedrock topic but nothing shows
up on a search (like you didn't already try that?). I tried Bedrock
back in 1988 when I bought my first Kitty Hawk M3, and I could've saved
a lot if I'd waited on the KH gear! I was fairly impressed with the
Bedrock. They are all tube, built in Nashua, NH. I remember their first
big endorser was Joe Perry. Maybe you should start a topic?
I know their first 1400 series were geared toward the Fender Bassman
4X10 type of sound. Then they made more of a Heavy Metal kind of amp.
(1500 maybe). The 1600 is their latest and I really don't know much
more because no one in my area carries them!c

| re: .30
The Vox mystique seems to revolve around one particular model they
used to make that several top players made some recordings with.
It's the AC-30 TB (top boost). Notably, Jeff Beck used this amp
on Beck's Bolero (Truth LP) to give you and idea what it sounds like.
George Harrison used on with the Beatles too (not a Vox super beatle).
The AC-30 was all tube, class A triode, so it easily got that creamy
'vintage' style distortion that everyone raves about.
Regarding the Bedrock, I'd be interested too, as I tried one of their
4x10 combos awhile back that was purported to sound like a pre-CBS
Super Reverb. IMHO it sounded more like a Marshall than a Fender.

Definately true. A lot of amps sound great by themselves, but just
don't work well with the other music in a band. I'd rather hear an amp
with other instruments rather then by itself, even if I have another

| Well kids, I tried the Bedrock/Vox "look-a-like" last night at
Harvey's Music in Milford, NH. Cool amp!
The clean channel sounds really sweet, very nice reverb with alittle
more "delay" than what I'm used to hearing... nice touch. The grille
cloth looks like a AC30 and from what I'm told there was a bit of a
problem with VOX over this so Bedrock will change the cloth and the
total grille design. I don't know if this change in newer models will
increase the value of the old VOX looking Bedrocks, but it's food for
thought. Anyway, the EQ was nice sounding and it was hard to get a bad
sound out of the clean channel. Pull bright, presence, bass, treble,
mid, pregain, postgain, tremolo speed, tremolo depth (this sounded cool
and made me start playing surfer tunes ;^). The overdrive channel
is NOT a dial-in type. You simply hit the footswitch and take whatever
Bedrock gives you. I don't like this feature at all! While it's not a
bad tone, you need to adjust your pregain and postgain dials carefully
in order to get the tone you're looking for. Bedrock states that the
overdrive is very Boogie-ish... NOT!!!!! While it's not bad, it left
me wanting more in the overdrive channel. The list is ~$1200. so take
that price for what it's worth as far as "real selling price". The
package is "beautiful" however, but it's alittle heavey at ~70lbs for the
2-12" combo. I don't know what the AC30TB would sound like next to it, but
this amp all alone is a beautiful sounding (in the clean channel),
beautiful looking amp... really cool! The overdrive channel I'm sure
could be tweeked in, but with the time allowed I sat and enjoyed the
clean channel playing SRV and Beach Boys tunes ;^).
Anyone looking to check this unit out can find one at Harvey's Music
in Milford, NH. Harvey said he "might" sell it (since he bought it
for himself originally). Will he? I dunno... in any case you can
still check it out at his store if you want, or call him at
(603)-673-8245 and talk to him about it if you want straight "honest"
answers without the salesman pitch.
How doesn it compare to my PV-MX/EV combo? It has more available EQ
than the PV and is more articulate. The clean channel sounded like
my Boogie (it's hard to say which one I liked better), but the over-
drive channel on the Boogie ripped the Bedrock apart. Remember that
the Bedrock was not designed to make mincemeat out of a Boogie. Again
listen to this amp as great sounding (Fenderish) clean amp with a
better overdrive than Fender could ever amagine and for a better price
than alot of the reissues out there. If that's what you're looking for,
then this amp may be for you, but if you're looking for a real shreader
with plenty of midrange boost and intense overdrive... look for
something else.
Rock on,
Fred

Not bad, but a tad expensive. Clean sounds pretty much like
my fender, distortion sound comprable to that found on the
Fender Super 60/112/210 or the Peavey Classic amps and every
bit as flexible ;-). It looked decent, the top handles were a
nice touch. For that kind of money, I'd be inclined to by a
Marshall 4100 2x12 combo.

I first heard about "the Bedrock that looks like an AC30" here
in notes and forgot about it until a month ago when I was at Kurlans'
Music in Worcester and they had two of them. Both the amps were BC-75s.
One new for ~$900, the other used, but mint, for $650. I aired out the
used one with a flametop Hamer for ~10 minutes. It was wonderful. It only
looks like a Vox AC30. It sounded like Marshall meets Fender meets Vox. The
Bedrock guy left a list for settings like "Sparkling AC30" and "Brown
Marshall". I tried them all and I was really impressed. It was exactly
what I was looking for. Great tube tremolo like an old Fender, EL34's
like a Marshall, and a pull treble pot that boosts it like an AC30.
I left, but couldn't stop thinking about it. I went back last Saturday
with my LP and Strat and aired it out again. This time I left the
store with it. I paid $600 for it.
BTW, I got a Manny's catalog today and they're getting $770 for
a new one.
