871.1 | If I remember Correctly . . . | ROLL::BEFUMO | Nuke the Whales | Thu Sep 29 1988 10:22 | 18 |
| If memory serves:
EB-0 - SG-shaped solid body bass with a single HUGE humbucking
PU positioned too close to the neck for any kind of punch.
EB-1 - A HEAVY violin-shaped solid body, introduced considerably
later than the other EBs
EB-2 - Hollow (or semi-hollow) body instrument, similar in shape
to an ES-335.
EB-3 - Just like the EB-0, but with a smaller humbucker in the
bridge position, in addition to the big pick up.
Someone in this file mentioned having an EB-4, but I don't recall
ever seeing one of those.

871.2 | EBO short | ELESYS::JASNIEWSKI | Our common crisis | Thu Sep 29 1988 10:28 | 10 |

One of the aspects of the EB series basses is that the scales
are not all necessarily loooong. I have (the remnants of) an EBO that
has a short scale neck - almost like playin a guitar. You have to
find a heavy set of strings for it to sound good. It'll never sound
like a P-Bass, cause of the pickup location and the short scale.
I have however seen "SG" shaped gibson basses with long scale necks.

871.3 | in a nutshell | SPHINX::WEBER | | Thu Sep 29 1988 10:33 | 20 |
| EB-0: SG style bass with one wide humbucker at neck, 30.5" scale
EB: cheaper version of EB-0
EB-1: Violin shaped body, otherwise similar to EB-0
EB-2: ES-335 body, pickups same as EB-3
EB-3: same body as EB-0, additional, small pickup in bridge position.
EB-4: EB-3 variant, different controls.
An "L" at the end means long (34.5") scale.
Ealy EB-0's had rounded, double cut bodies with banjo-style tuners.
These are almost all readily available at almost any vintage dealer.
There are two, rarer six strings, both called EB-6. One is an EB-0
style, the other an EB-2 style.

871.5 | Another version | SPHINX::WEBER | | Fri Sep 30 1988 09:54 | 13 |
| An early 1970's variant of EB-3 had a *slotted* headstock, like
a classical guitar.
The rare times I play bass, I use a short scale (Les Paul Triumph)
model. Finding decent strings for these is almost impossible. I
once had an EB-O that I did a Dimarzio conversion on--it sounded
much better, but I doubt that a serious bass player would like it.
Guitar Trader currently has an EB-3 for $625 (too much, IMO), Strings
West has an EB-0 for $275, and an EB-2 for $450. I'd bet virtually
any vintage dealer has at least one model in stock at any time

See 230.5 for rundown on Gibson bass models up to 1986.
Gibson has reissued the Thunderbird (at $1200 +) but I doubt that
the EBs will be coming back anytime soon as their sound is out of
vogue.

If anyone out there is still looking for an EBO and you're in MA,
MacDuff's in Shrewsbury has a cherry one with the slotted headstock
for sale.
