752.0. "Humbucker Wiring Options" by VAXWRK::INGRAM (That was then, This isn't happening.) Wed Aug 03 1988 12:32

	Let's see...	Series in-phase
			Series out-of-phase
			Parallel in-phase
			Parallel out-of-phase
			single coil

Not to mention the options you could get mixing more than 1 pickup
	together...

I'm going to rewire (and probably replace the pickups) in my 3
humbucker Les Paul. I'm planning on using pots with the built
in DPDT switches to enable me to modify pickup phase and to do
	single coil.

What coil configurations for a humbucker yield a useful sound
	and which are unusable?

Thanks,

	Larry

First of all, in my opinion "everything" is useful! The more tones
you can get out of your guitar the better. Series mode will be alittle
noisier than parallel modes (gee... I think I got that right). In-phase
will give it that sweet Gibson tone, out-of-phase will tend to drop
out the low end. Nothing wrong with that. It's basically what Carvin
does to their guitars. They can get a nice and almost believable
"strat" type tone out of humbuckers. Of course this is being used
on a "2" pickup guitar. On a "3" pickup system, it would be interesting
to hear the results. It would be very smart to have the push/pull
pots to do the work of toggle switches. Good move! It alwayed bothered
me to see "DPDT" switches on a Les Paul. It just didn't seem right
to me, but that's my feelings.

    Have fun! :^)

I find that out of phase connections just leave me flat...I tend
to like a straight humbucker in the front with a single coil in
the back, in phase sound for leads and a straight single coil sound
    for rhythm...

752.3Series Wiring....SMURF::BENNETTBe Bay BeWed Aug 01 1990 12:177
I've been living with an SG wired in series for a coupla years.
I understand the problems with it. Does anyone out there want
to fill me in on what's good about this mod? I'm thinking of
re-wiring the whole mess and would like to evaluate the options
up front. FWIW - the pickups are split-coil dimarzios and there
is one coil-kill toggle for each pickup....
