    I've played both the Hohner and Cort and Hohner wins.  The pickups
    are EMG Selects which are better than the Cort "Powersounds" and
    the construction appears better, but surprise!!! both are made in
    Korea so they might actually be the product of the same company!!!
    
    Hohner also has a headless rig with a Strat-like body.
    
    MA area prices are about $400 for Hohners brand new.
    
    

I got the Steinberger bass clone made by Hohner. I think for the money 
it is pretty nicely done. I'm mainly a guitar player, and mainly picked 
up a bass for  filling in 4 track recordings, finger exercise and variety.

I was looking for (a) Inexpensive, and (b) Portable but didn't want
any K-mart trash either.

I think the finish could be a bit better, but everything else is 
top knotch. If you get one, get one of the
soft nylon carrying cases, with the long strap. You can sling
it over your shoulder, and have both hands free for hauling
other gear.

One of the nicest things about this bass is portability.
Very easy to move around. Its small size is also one of
the disadvantages. Because of its small mass, its not always
where you expect it to be, if you're used to heavier basses.
When you start poundin on it, it has a tendency to bounce around a bit
more than something like a jazzmaster would.

All in all, I'm very happy with mine.

    I just got a quote on a Hohner.  The guy at Freedom guitar in 
    Hollyweird will sell it for $440 (list) less 20% and throw in a
    gig bag.  I guess that comes to about $360 with tax and my meager
    negotiating skills.
    
    I'll see if anyone has any used ones in the recycler (our version
    of the want-ad), but I have a feeling fretless will be hard to find.

    I had a look at both the Hohner and the Cort headlesses (is that the
plural of 'headless' ?) a while back. I preferred the Hohner, especially
the active electronics version (the B2A). I've heard that the Status-type
headless is also very nice (the Jack bass), but I've not played one. I should
point out that I'm a guitarist and not a bass player, so I'm maybe judging
them from the wrong point of view for a bassist !

By the way, I was at the recent British Music Fair and noticed that Hohner
are now doing a six-string version of the Jack (very nice looking).

    Well, I finally picked one of these guys up.  I got a hohner fretless
    headless (there ain't much to it, huh?) with a Steinberger gig bag
    and an extra set of strings for $375 out the door.  Come to find
    out, the list on these suckers has gone up to $589.
    
    I am totally thrilled with the sound.  EMG selects with active EQ
    and separate bass and treble.  I guess the model number is something
    like B2A F1.  I could never really reproduce the sound of a fretless,
    so now, I don't have to.

Hello. I looked into a local music shop on Saturday and found a Hohner
Steinberger-licenced 'bodyless' bass for �260, without a case.
Considering that it's also left-hand, I guess the previous notes
referring to prices of around $400 make it seem like a pretty good
deal. Would anyone care to update their impressions of this bass? Also,
can anyone give a more up-to-date price for the U.S.?

I would like to know of any things to look out for, as well as whether
people find them to be a good all around instrument.

FWIW: Daddy's used to have a 5 string version for $339.

    List for the B2A (four strings, with preamp) is now $650.  Sam Ash
    *used* to sell these for $330 with a gig bag (haven't seen them listed
    in more recent flyers).   Used ones I see in stores here in MA tend to
    run about $300.

    I think the Hohner Steinberger clones are decent instruments.
    They're lighter than a real Steinberger and have a slightly
    wider string spacing, both of which I consider plusses over
    the real thing.  And they don't use that silly strap hanging
    system the Steinies have.  On the down side, I don't think the
    tone cuts through as well as it does on the big guy, but whad'ya
    expect?  A good, economical alternative if you like the Steinberger
    style.

    No not a Hohner, mine is a Cort Steinberger clone bass.  It's not too
    bad, but doesn't have the punch of a good bass.  Maybe it would be
    better with different pickups, the thing is bone stock right now.
    
    BTW, I've played the Hohner one and it felt a LOT better then mine,
    seemed like a nice bass.  Didn't plug it in, so I don't know what it
    sounds like.

    A late entry, I know, but I bought a Hohner Steinberger B2A. I've
    recently seen one in a local music store, second-hand for 375 pounds.
    Makes my private purchase of 140 pounds seem like a snip, even more so
    when you plug the thing in.
    
    The range of sounds from the bass are incredible, especially with the
    active circuit switched on. It emulates Rickys at one end of the tonal
    range and has a gorgeous, creamy sound if on full bass. The neck is
    surprisingly long; 24 frets and at the top end it sounds like the lower
    realms of a six-string lead.
    
    One nice touch that is included in the "Under License From Steinberger" 
    tag is the fold-down arm that rests the guitar on your leg when playing
    sitting down. The balance is wonderful - it just sits there, even
    without being steadied with the hand.
    
    I was told by the person selling this that they are now out of
    production. My advice is to grab one while you can. Highly recommended.
