607.0. "Looking for SG-LesPaul" by ALL41::BOUCHARD (OA$SURF) Mon Apr 25 1988 23:55

    I am looking to purchase an older SG Custom or SG-Les Paul. I say
    older because Gibson has recently reintroduced the SG-Les Paul.
    Specifically, the ones made in the 50's or early 60's are of interest
    to me. I know some shops where I can obtain them, however, these
    places typically ask (in my opinion) a bloody fortune (i.e. > $500).
    Any assistance would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

607.1I won't trade mine....TYFYS::MOLLERVegetation: A way of lifeTue Apr 26 1988 15:3811
    I bought one in 1964. The neck is kind of spongy on them (real long,
    with lots of available frets - clear to thet 21's fret - made out
    of Mahogany). If you are used to Strat's, the neck isn't as stiff,
    and you can easily pull back the neck & toss the whole thing out
    of tune when you grab a chord. When you let go, it's back in tune
    again. Weird stuff. I own a 1964 & a White 1960 SG-Les Paul.
    Neither are that popular these days, but the 1964 is my favorite
    guitar. Good luck, You can get them for $300 - $600 here in
    the Denver / Colorado Springs area. I suspect that comparable with
    the rest of the U.S.

    Re. original SG-Les Paul. We are talking about a classic here.
    I would be very surprised to see one of these in good shape
    selling for $500. I would expect to pay almost 500 for an
    average run-o-the-mill SG, never mind an original 1960 LP-SG.

     Hmm I saw one at Friendly River in Cornish Maine the weekend of
    Springjam...they wanted a fairly high price but it slips my
    mind...played nice though...

    .2 Where do you do your shopping?

    I picked an SG-Custom up about a year ago. Included the original
    case. Price = $125. Now mind you, I recognize this is the exception
    rather than the rule however, anything over $500 is (in my opinion)
    a rip-off unless we are talking in mint condition.

607.5do they have any more?CNTROL::GEORGEWed May 04 1988 19:089
re -.1

$500 seems about normal retail, maybe even low, for a good mid-60's
SG-Custom in stores around Mass. $300 is rock bottom (aking price)
even if they're standards in poor shape.

$125??? Where? Are they open tonight? :-)

607.6'63 SG in Canada ehPOLAR::BACKSFri Apr 18 1997 12:2125
    I own a '63 Gibson SG. It is all oringinal with the first type of
    whammy bar on it. It has P90 pickups in it and plays great. The only
    problem with it is that it goes out of tune when you use the whammy too
    hard but this is to be expected.
     I had it appraised here in Ottawa and was told it was worth
    approximately $1500. Considering I bought it off a guy who was
    desperate for money for $500 with the case I guess I lucked out.
     By the way,I wanted to replaced the pickups and asked some of the
    boys here along these note files and I was told that the P100's
    would fit with no additional work or routing out at all. So I bought
    them and found out that they are too thick to fit in. I would have had
    to route out the inside to make them fit. Needless to say I returned
    the pickup's and have the original one's back in again. They sound
    good but I still have that tiny hum that drives me crazy. Especially
    when I'm on stage.
     Hard to believe the difference in price between the States and Canada.
    Makes you wonder just how lucky you boys really are.
     It's no wonder you guys have so many toys. If I bought have of what
    you guys own I could buy a house with the same amount of money.
     Needless to say I rent.

     Ha Ha.

    Well, not *all* of us have the illness that bad. We all acquire guitar
    toys at different rates. I guess you could say the syndrome has
    different stages.

I'm in remission...

607.9No, no.... don't cure me. I like being sick.BSS::MANTHEINot quitting my day jobTue Apr 22 1997 13:2813
    Oh yeah.... I'll buy that! :-)

    It's just in it's next incubation period before it attacks with even
    greater force.
    ...not that I want to bring bad news - but I haven't found anyone who's
    ever been actually cured.

    Remember, the first step is to admit you have a problem. Maybe you're
    spelling remission d-e-n-i-a-l ?

It's quite possible, early signs of remission have been know
to look jus tlike denile,, it's easy enough to check though,
go to any guitar center with a credit card in your wallet,
if you stay for more than an hour, and don't buy something,
it's remission,,, and I've already passed this test!

(But I'm alos looking at another epiphone so go figure..)
