546.1 | STV = Mega-Massive Bass Bottom! | SALEM::ABATELLI | | Thu Mar 24 1988 11:57 | 33 |
| Hi There,
Well.... welcome to the world of mega-massive bass bottoms.
Are you really sure that you want to sink money into aluminum
angle (how many feet of material) then you can't forget the
side material, even light duty side material will be big bucks.
Personally and it's up to you, but you can get cabinet material
from Peavey (either black or cream color tolex (sp), or the newer
looking grey (indoor/outdoor carpet type material) from Peavey
for alot less than you would spend for the stuff you seem to
have your heart set on. Up to you! You can pickup this stuff
at any Daddy's Music Store (or the likes of...) or you could pick
up your Aluminum angle at almost any good hardware store. You can
buy the corners at most larger music stores for either roadcase
type, or material corners. The casters can be found at either
a music store, or hardware store. I would shop around for the casters
because some extra heavy-duty (non-removable) casters can actually
be cheaper at a the hardware store. A bottom such as yours, you'll
probably leave the casters on, because of its weight and size of
the cabinet. You can also p/u the side materials and H.D. speaker
(metal type) protectors any larger home improvement store. Have you
hired the roadies yet? I hate to think what this thing is going
to weigh after you combine it with your road case.
Lift weights much?
Probably should start!
Good luck,
Fred
P.S. BTW.... Pop-in, pop-out casters work well "for a time", but
some types tend to break and fall out everytime you lift the
cabinet to load and unload it out of the truck. I'm not saying
that it will happen, it was just a "thought" I wanted to throw
your way.

Hey Jeff,
Personally, if I was gonna do anything to an SVT bottom, one of
the first things I'd do would be to cut the thing in half and
make it 2 4 x 10's (or one 4x10 and one 5x10, depending on which
SVT cab you have). I think it makes it a lot easier to carry, and
you can still set it up the traditional way. I knew a bassist who
did this and was quite happy.

Those were exactly the kind of responses/suggestion's I was looking
for.
.1 your right,I never did consider the weight increase doing it
up road case...
I did get in touch with a place that has roll's of black, 5'x4'6"
for $19.95...figure I'll need like 2 1/2 rolls....plus caster's
and a grille.
re .2 new_wave_fiend eh???
That there southerner we both aquinted to better get his discription's
on track...:-):-)

Ah yes, the SVT hernia maker. I also cut my SVT cab in half.
A word of caution. My cab had four internal baffles. They had
all been put in a little off-center. So when I cut it in half,
I cut a piece of the baffle. I had to do some cosmetic carpentry
to get it looking good. I still have the grill cloth and frame
if anybody wants it. I later ended up making 4 little cabs.
Easier to lift, and I could spread them out over the stage.
