455.0. "Pignose?" by CSSE::CLARK (I'm glad(I'm Glad(I'm Glad))) Wed Jan 06 1988 10:39

    I'd like to find one of those little Pignose amps you can
    plug right into a guitar. The kind that run on batteries.
    Does anybody know if they're still being sold? If so, where
    can I find one? I think they'd be ideal for jamming at lunch
    with somebody playing an acoustic guitar.

    I think I saw one in Mr. C's in Marlboro recently.

455.2Mr C's has them.ANGORA::JACQUESWed Jan 06 1988 12:109
    Mr. C's definately carries them. They sell for 100 dollars. The thing
    to consider is that for 100 dollars you can buy amps that are a
    little bit bigger, play louder, run off of AC, and have more controls than
    a Pignose. It's one of the few battery powered amps, though. Peavey
    now makes a Solo series of small amps that will run off of battery
    or AC for about $150.

    If I were in your situation, I'd buy a Scholz soloist for $100,
    and if you *had* to play without headphones, get some of those cheap
    radio shack powered speakers, and patch them out of the soloist.

    I played my guitar on a plane flight with a soloist and nobody bothered
    me, and vice-versa. (They did look at me weird......)

    Well I found a little "G-Blaster" amp at The Minor Chord in Acton
    that fills all my need (small, can run on AC or Batteries) and is
    certainly loud enough to compete with an acoustic guitar. It was
    only $25. It even has a Fuzz control. It don't sound like a Marshall,
    but for that price I didn't expect it to. Now all I need is somebody
    to jam with. Any HLO guitar players wanna jam at lunch?

455.5Happy Pignose Owner !!ANGORA::JACQUESMon Jan 18 1988 13:069
    I am now the proud owner of a Pignose. I went to McDuff's music.
    He had one that was used, but in good shape for $50.oo so why not.

    I haven't tried it out yet, since he didn't have any batteries in
    stock, but he assured me that it works fine.

455.6Crossmix Amp7541::ROSTIt's the beat, the beat, the beatMon Jul 17 1989 11:3828

    Saw an intersting blast from the past yesterday at a jam session,
    a Pignose Crossmix amp. This was one of Pignose's attempts at a
    full sized amp (the other was the 30/60).

    A Crossmix is a 75 watt solid state amp with channel switching,
    a feature that in 1980 was still not too common. It was made in
    1-12" and 2-10" versions.

    The amp has two channels, a normal channel with volume, bass and
    treble, and dirty channel with volume, master volume, bass/mid/treble.

    The cool features:

    1. Each channel has its own reverb send, with a master reverb control
    for the return.

    2. Each channel has its own effects loop (!!).

    3. Like Peavey Automix, the channel switching allows running both
    channels in parallel, plus it can be used as a true two channel
    amp (seperate guitars in each channel) if desired.

    In contrast to many other amps, all the effect loop and footswitch
    jacks are front mounted. The amp is covered with the same fake leather
    as the little Pignoses. Sounds pretty good, although the overdrive
    tone isn't as good as some modern solid state units. I bet you could
    find a used one for about $150.

    Lucky me got a Pignose for my birthday. Very useful
    little portable, good for those rooms at home
    that don't already feature a guitar amp (the number
    is getting smaller and smaller!). I had expected it
    to be real fuzzy sounding, but its plenty clean.

    However the wall wart feature is something to avoid - just
    use batteries. The ac adapter causes a lotta noise
    wherever I try it, but with the batteries its quiet.

    If that's the case, the wall wart (transformer) is probably the
    culprit. Try a differant one.

455.9It's that matter/anitmatter thing :-)BSS::MANTHEIMy wife is jealous of MS.DOSMon Mar 25 1996 08:289
    I agree. They should be clean. part of the reason (aside from just
    plain cheap) that a lot of manufacturers went to the wall wart is that
    an external power supply cannot generate the same kind of noise that an
    internal one can. It makes the case much easier and less expensive to
    build.

    Or so the story goes.
