411.0. "Mail Order / Dealer Addresses / Music Store Info" by UHURU::LAMBERT (Skating away...) Mon Dec 07 1987 11:21

I Love shopping by mail, getting mail-order catalogues, etc...
It never occured to me before reading this notes file that there
might be a major mail order marketplace out there for musical
instruments and such. If you have access to mail order, please
post a reply to this note listing the company and how to get it's
catalogue. I'd like to centralize the location of these sources
    in a single note.

Bill Godbout Electronics in Calif are 3 good sources of effects
parts and accessories for the guitarist. Will post the exact
	addresses soon.

Interestin yesterday I got a catalog that is good good on prices
that I was going ot start a note on it...today here the note is
    already started.

they carry replacement and repair parts. Some very hard to find
and very inexpensive stuff in the catalog. best prices I've seen
in a mail order catalog. they do not sell effects guitars etc...they
do sell kit parts (make your own axe) replacement and repair parts
for just about any stringed instrument,, tools, instructional videos
    (repair seminars!) etc.

A couple of places you might want to try also are

profoud sound 1-800-63-sound ask for Shane
east coast sound 203-748-2799 ask for Reed

    mention me...and DEC

these two places beat Music Emporium's prices by big $$

I got a midiverb II from Profound for $325, lowest bid I got anywhere.
    I ordered (but haven't received ) a symetrics 525 stereo
    compressor/limiter/noise gate list $499 for $350...big discounts.

    east coast has a catalog..profound doesn't that I know of, they're
just a small store that does good discounts for DECCIES among
others...but they know DEC as the COMMUSIC notefilers have ordered
a great deal of stuff from them.

Others are Sam Ash 1-800-972-6274, Manny's 212-819-0576, Thouroughbred
    Music 813-237-5597

of these Thoroughbred gave the bset quotes.

If you're interested in group discounts a "DEC" group purchase is
being discussed in NOVA::COMMUSIC. Other dealers are discussed there
but profound and east coast seem to be the best I contacted in my
search for the two items I ordered.

While you guitarists were searching these sources for axes, did
you notice any that offered exceptional deals on drums?

I'm looking for a mail order company with a good selection,
reasonable prices, and who won't kill me with handling charges.

     thanks

    You might try:
    The Mandolin Brothers
    629 Forest Ave
    Staten Island, NY 10310
    (718) 981-3226

They carry new Martins, Taylors, Guilds, Santa Cruz, Ovation
and Gibson, along with a number of less expensive lines. They
also carry a lot of vintage stuff - mandolins, guitars and
banjos. While they stress acoustics, they do carry electrics
too and do a lot of business through the mail. Their average
discount is good - 41% off list price of Martins, Guilds and
Ovations. I've ordered a number of things through them over the
years. Mention me if you talk to Stan Jay, the owner. You
can call or write to get their catalog.

411.8East Coast vs Profound SoundANGORA::JACQUESMon Dec 14 1987 12:4414
I called 2 places this morning for prices on a Galien Krueger
250ml amp. Profound Sound (Kansas) wants 529.oo for them. I
also called East Coast Sound (Danbury,Conn). They are asking
479.oo for the same amp. That is a pretty big difference (50.oo)
East Coast is also much closer to New England. Only a 2 hour ride
from Worcester. The guy at East Coast said I'd be better off having
it mailed, otherwise I would have to pay the 7.5% Conn. sales tax.
I haven't tried any other mail order places. What I might do is
use these prices as leverage, and try to pry a decent price out
    of someone local.

I'm not sure how much mail order business they do however, I have
had very good success dealing with the folks at the Music Gallery
in Highwood, IL. 312-432-6350. Ask for Frank (the owner) and tell
him I sent you. I have dealt w/ numerous music dealers through
the years (in various parts of the country) and have found the Gallery
to be more competitive pricing wise then any other dealer. Plus,
they BACK what they sell. For example, about 8 years ago, I purchased
a small Sure P.A. board. I used the board for 3 months and was
not satisfied with it. I explained my dillema to Frank. He took
it back w/ no questions asked and gave me a full refund. Nice guy
    to do business with.

They carry: Marshall, Fender (amps & guitars), Laney, Gibson, Guild,
Ibanez, Boss, Ludwig, Pearl, Korg, Yamaha, and many others that
    I can't recall.

I called Profound Sound this morning. Here are some current
offerings:

ART SGE $ 495
Mesa Boogie Simul-Class 295 $1,050
Roland SDE1000 $ 250 (they said they're blowing these
                                         out)

They don't carry Metaltronix, but he said a friend of his does and is
trying to get rid of them. Also, Shane no longer works for them.

Fine and dandy. A week later and still no merger!.

they had them in stock and would ship pronto. I wait 3 weeks only

be at least another 6-8 weeks ! My check had long since cleared
the bank too. I had to talk to several people there and threaten
legal action before they would refund my money.

Back when I was using Hiwatt amps, I ordered one through them. The
first one came with the tubes smashed and the transformer having by its

I have ordered from East Coast Sound and Sam Ash with very good
results. I will say that another noter had trouble with East Coast
over a repair issue on a new piece, though (he wanted a new unit, they
wanted to fix the one he had).

BTW, East Coast's catalog says $100 minimum for charges, my dealings
with them were for more $$ so that issue never arose. MA noters, they
have opened a showroom in the Hartford, CT area, if you want to go

If memory serves, someone recently asked about mail order places.
Well, here they are:

Thoroughbred Music -good prices, helpful salespeople,
	1-800-800-4654 -relatively fast shipping, located
				-in Tampa, Fl.

Musician's Friend	-they work with their catalog prices
1-800-776-5173 which you can get by calling.
-some of their prices are good
				-helpful salespeople

Sam Ash -'lets make a deal' cutthroat place
1-800-472-6274 -at times i doubt the credibility of
				-their salespeople
-some of the best prices, though

	Sound Southwest -good prices
1-800-342-4327 -they say they'll beat any offer

Good luck.

411.38Can I return these speakers for cash back?COGITO::SULLIVANSinging for our livesWed Oct 23 1991 11:2915

Does anyone know Sam Ash's return policy? I just ordered some EV S100
PA speakers (haven't arrived yet), and (of course) yesterday I saw some
used Bose speakers - the ones I'd been hoping to find but had given up
on - for less that I paid for the new EVs. If Sam Ash has a money-back
guarantee like Musician's Friend, I might return the EVs and buy the
Bose speakers (going to listen to them at Lunch today). Feel free to
tell me I'm crazy if you think I'm crazy.

    Justine

ps I'm going to be using these speakers for folk music - guitar and
vocals, no bass, drums and probably no keys, so I don't need a lot of
"bottom," and I really like the clean sound of both the Bose and the
    EV S100.

None of these offer any really outstanding deals (except for Carvin,
but they're a different story anyway), but the catalogs are good
reference sources for those times when you need to know about a piece
of software (whoops, sorry - thought I was in COMMUSIC for a moment) or
    hardware.

I jes got a new copy of Musicians' Friend yesterday. Anybody vouch for
the quality if the Charvel acoustic/electric guitars they sell? I
noticed a nice looking axe for about $329; I'd love to have an acoustic
electric, but I've NEVER bought an axe mail order. Are the Charvels in
the same quality class as the Takamine's? I believe I'd like a
    "Takamine class" acoustic/electric.....

FYI, "Profound Sound" mentioned in earlier notes here appears to be out of

they're still around would someone post the new number?

   Ditto on Sound Southwest.

Got a new catalog in the mail over the weekend, from a place called Capital
Supply. Looks like they're based in Montana (or does "MO" stand for Missouri?).
Prices seem to be competitive with other mail order catalogs, or better.
For instance, the SM-57 mike is listed for $82, which is about the best
I've seen.

They're number is 1-800-654-9393. Feel free to send me mail (or post here)
if you have any questions about specific products, I'll look 'em up for
ya.

General product lines:

Mikes - AKG, Shure, Sennheiser, Samson, Nady
Guitars - Stephen's, Washburn, Charvel, Jackson, Valley Arts,
		  Ovation, Jasmine (Takamine)
Effects - Digitech, Boss, Rockman, Furman, Korg, dbx, Zoom,
		  Sansamp, Behringer, t.c. electronics, ART
Amps - Hartke, GK, Ross, Marshall, Park, Seymour Duncan, Attack
PA - Cerwin Vega, Soundtech, Klipsch, Crown, BGW, Hot Spot
Recording - Fostex, Sony (DATs), Tannoy, SKB (racks/cases)

Didn't see *any* keyboards listed in there....

    A little feedback on service....

I called in my first order to Stewart-McDonald last week; I needed a
black Tele pickguard for me and some quality tuners and speed knobs to
    upgrade my wife's electric bass.

The operator was *very* courteous and helpful, especially since I was
ordering from a borrowed old (1992!) catalog; I paid for the order
with my Visa .... and the order was in my hands within three DAYS!

Now THAT'S what I call service....and I'm already drooling over the
brand new catalog they sent me! 8^)

    						--Eric--

P.S. The Gotoh tuners for the bass are great! Not too costly, and
    smooooooth operating.

Anyone know who in -1 publishes catalogs? I currently only receive
these, but would be interested in others. Please note any outstanding
    ones that you get.

    thanks,

FWIW -

I'm diddling around with HTML, and have a home page

From this page, I have all the cool jump sites (like
these y'all just mentioned. :-)

Looks like corporate IP is still screwed up tho, so be
patient if you don't get to me.

Well, I finally got bit by the mail order biz after years of using
them. Sam Ash sent me a PL-8 instead of the PL+ ;-( Now I gotta wait
    even longer.
