| re Crybaby
I've got a Dallas Arbiter Wah-face that I think gets that old throaty
Vox wah-wah sound. The key ingredient is supposedly the inductor which
comes from the Vox factory in Italy. I know a place that sells
these inductors if you're interested.

| Not that this has anything much to do with your question, but I've
been through several WAH's, and currently have what I think is the
best sounding one around - MORLEY. My particular model is a MORLEY
rotating WAH. The rotating sound simulates a lesley cabinet, and
is a very interesting mechanism which would probably be better
discussed elsewhere. The really cool thing is the pedal, in that
it has no internal moving parts; the volume/wah is controlled via
a photoresistor. The pedal is connected to a "blanket" inside,
which can completely cover or completely expose the resistor to
an internal lightbulb. No noise, smooth, high gain, NICE SOUND!

Interesting you mentioned that. That was the first thing I
looked for when I opened up my pedal. Didn't find any. My
old wahwah (a Sola Sound) did have one, I think it was a 10
mH job and boy, did it growl! Guess you get more of a notch
with an RLC circuit than a vanilla RC.
I think I'm going to swap my pedal for the Dallas Arbiter if
it's not too late. Btw, do you have their FuzzFace?

Musician's Friend happily agreed to accept the Dunlop pedal for a
full refund!

Re: .5
As far as I know, Dallas Arbiter pedals have been unavailable for
about ten years at least, except for the recently reintroduced Fuzz
Face.
Although, wahs seem to be coming back again (DOD and Ibanez just
brought out new ones) maybe they will start making them again.

| Maybe someone knows for sure. I was under the impression that the
original CryBaby wahwah was made by Vox, not Dunlop? I have owned
two of these pedals and loved their sound. As someone correctly
pointed out, the CryBaby had a very limited travel -- the sound
went from that "awwwh" sound to a razor sharp growl in less than
an inch.
I never used the pedal to get a real wahwah sound such as in the
"White Room" solo. I used it to get a high-end boost that sounded
more like a screaming cat. Carlos Santana did this real well.
I had never really thought about it, but the wahwah sound did vanish
some time ago. Killed by over use?

Re: .7
Vox *did* make the original Cry Baby. Jim Dunlop bought the rights
and has been selling them for the last few years. I have heard
some peopl grouse about the Dunlops much as folks grouse about CBS
Fenders. They now also have a bass wah-wah version out for all you
John Wetton and Rick Kemp fans.

| Just as an aside, MXR's Envelope Filter is a *great* "auto-wah"
pedal. You can adjust the wah from a "wah" to a "waoh" (!), as
also the level at which it kicks in. Quite as a mouse, too! Of
course, it won't substitute for a manual wahwah, but I use mine
quite a bit for an effect that's almost impossible to get by
rapidly moving your foot in time with your picking.
