364.0. "need help on single coil adjust." by DEPOT::FLATHERS () Wed Oct 14 1987 01:42

    I have a fernandes strat ( a good fender copy) with, of course,
    single coil pickups. But I don't get a even pickup across all
    strings. (i.e. open G is hotter than open B )

      My questions is, how do you adjust single coil pickups to
    correct this?

    are the magnets individually adjustable?

    (forgive my ignorance, strats are only things I dream about from
    time to time, and I usually don't have time (in my dream) to
    examine the pickups)

364.2its not a bug...RICKS::CALCAGNIWed Oct 14 1987 10:5210
    Vintage strats (and copies) have the G string magnet very close to
    the string (making it louder) because in ancient times G strings
    were wound and needed the volume boost. Put on a modern G string
    and it sounds a little too loud. Strat pickups don't have adjustable
    pole pieces, so the only thing you can do is attack it with a file
    (not recommended). Of course, the louder G string is now part of
    that sought after "vintage" Strat sound; enjoy, it's not a bug,
    its a FEATURE.

364.3Look for custom gauge wound G strings !ANGORA::JACQUESWed Oct 14 1987 11:3321
    	You can check in Music stores for custom gauge string selections.
    Look for a string the same guage as you are currently using for
    G, only wound. Wound g strings are nice because they are easy to get
    hold of for note bending. Some electric guitar string sets (Plain
    steel) come through with wound G strings as well.

    	But as was mentioned in .2, this is part of the characteristic
    Strat sound. Hendix's exclusive sound is due to the fact that he
    played left handed on a right handed Strat, with the strings reversed,
    but the pickups were not reversed. Therefore, the high pole piece,
    usually located under the G string is now under the D string, and
    etc. Duncan makes reverse Strat pickups for right handed players that
    want the Hendrix sound. I believe the pickups on the Fernandez Strat
    are made for Fernandez by Seymour Duncan, and are intended to be
    a copy of a stock 62 strat pickup.

364.4Change the strings first.RUTLND::FABATELLIThu Oct 15 1987 15:0012
    Hi there,
         Have you changed to a different manufacturer of guitar strings????
    I had the same problem with my strat when I used a certain type
    of string. I switched to GHS Boomer light's (.010") and now to Ernie
    Ball lights (.010") and E.B. Med. (.11"'s). I haven't had a problem
    since. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and don't blame the pick-ups so
    soon ! Check the stupid things first. Try changing the strings to
    a different manufacturer first.

    Let me know how you make out with it !!

    I took a file to the pole pieces! And it worked out o.k.! I get
    a more even sound,(the way I prefer it).
       Thanks for the idea!
