302.0. "Les Paul Studio?" by POGO::HENDERSON () Mon Jul 20 1987 22:10

    I am thinking of picking up a new Gibson Les Paul Studio model
    and would be please if I could tap some information from fellow
    guitar noters.

    1. Are the electronics similar between all of the Les Paul models?
       For example would the Custom have the same pickups as the Studio?

    2. I have found a dealer that can deliver the Studio for $499.00
       with a HSC. This has been the best price I have been able to
       find, does anyone know what a Gibson Studio lists for? I am
       assuming $499.00 is below list.

    3. Are there "LARGE" differences in the vintage Les Pauls and the
       reissues put out recently by Gibson.

    Thanks in advance for your input!

302.1Sounds like a good priceMORRIS::JACQUESTue Jul 21 1987 11:005
    $499.oo sounds like a damn good price for a new Les Paul. What is
    the list price for this guitar ? You can usually get 10-20% off
    of a musical instrument if you purchase it in New York.

302.2from what I remember of them...ERASER::BUCKLEYNo Substitute for ArroganceTue Jul 21 1987 12:105
    My understanding of the les Paul 'studio' series was that it was
    basically a no frills version. The electronics are the same, but
    it has an all mahogany body (ie-no maple top), no binding whatsoever,
    dot inlays, etc. If it sounds good, why not? My guess is that it
    won't have the same tone as a 'Custom' would.
302.3LP Studio = low impedence?BOOKIE::WIEGLERMon Aug 03 1987 17:164
    I remember seeing a Les Paul Studio model years ago. If I remember
    correctly, it was set up to input into a low impedence jack for
    recording purposes. Therefore it would not work well with a standard
    guitar amp. Is this true or was this a special converted guitar?
302.4Low Impedance Les PaulsAQUA::ROSTThe pumpkin is breathing hardMon Aug 03 1987 17:2513

    The guitar referred to in .3 is a Les Paul *Recording* model; there
    was also a "Personal" model, same electronics, fancier finish and
    a "Triumph" bass.

    The wiring was either low or high impedance by throwing a switch.

    Gibson made a special Les Paul amp with a low impedance input for
    these guitars.

    They were made from around 1970 to ???? The bass was the last to
    be dropped, it's in catalogs as late as 1979.

302.5GOOD DEAL @ 499ECAVAX::VALASEKWed Aug 12 1987 11:039
    The other member of our band plays a Les Paul Studio Model.
    I am not an authority, but here is what I know.

    Les Paul Studios list somewhere around 800.00 they have 2 humbuckers,
    binding (if you wish), and what I believe Gibson calls "vintage"
    machine heads. I have seen them discounted to 749.00 and the best
    deal we could get when looking for one was 650.00. It is no frills,
    ie. like gold hardware etc. but is a good guitar (my opinion).
    499.00 sounds like a "killer" deal to me.
302.6Moochase Garcias!FTMUDG::HENDERSONWed Aug 26 1987 13:4111
    	Thanks for the info, I found the Les Paul Studio for 461.00
    which I thought was a fair deal. (CASH) The hard shell case is
    60.95 so the whole package is $521.95 and this includes the initial
    set up of the guitar. The one I'm picking up is wine red and the
    other colors offered were black and white. There is a two week wait
    if Gibson has the model in stock and can be up to three months if
    not.

    Thanks again,
    Don

    What does 'Moochase Garcias' means? and what language is it? Are
    you trying out your Spanish? I do Spanish muy bien. I think you
    want to say 'muchas gracias'

    	This is a rare dialect combining the worst of Spanish with
    Colonial Armenian Peasant lingo. It is in its correct form.

    Anyone know what wood(s) the LP Studio is made from? Having a black one
    myself, I sometimes wonder what's under all that lacquered paint!

    ... they also come with the trapezoid inlays (same as standards and
    deluxes) now at no extra cost. And, you can get 'em with gold hardware
    for about $50 more ...

    Scary (who's gonna grab one as soon as the Ibanez sells ...)
302.12My *Tonequest* is O V E R !!!RAVEN1::JERRYWHITERoll'em-I'll just feel somethingMon Jan 28 1991 06:4524
I *finally* picked up my Les Paul Studio Friday .... I was in for a few
surprises. I ordered it in a wine finish, which was *supposed* to look
more like a very subtle cherry finish. Instead, it appears to have a curly
tiger maple top ! The guys at the music store were slobbering all over it.
Apparently, the factory messed up the back of a Limited Edition Les Paul
Custom, shaved it down to Studio thickness (- "), and recovered some of their
losses - definitely my gain. I'm sure there aren't too many of these
floating around.

I also ordered a "dress up" kit, which included creme trim parts (mounting
rings, toggle switch knob and faceplate, pickguard), gold speed knobs, and
a brass jack plate. This looks *very* sharp with the gold hardware. It's
a gorgeous hunk of wood ! It's in Pat Blair's office right now ... I'll
let him give his unbiased opinion later ! 8^)

Now, for the playability review. I played it for a whole set Friday night,
like a dream. At first it was a little hard to get used to the neck and
the scale length (it ain't a strat ...), but by the 2nd song, I was right
at home. The tone was typically "Les Paul-ish", nice and fat. I kicked up
the presence on the Mosvalve and gave it a little more clarity.

I can't say enough about this little gem.

Scary ( a happy camper !!! )
302.13Hey, I'm not a Rack Puke!RAVEN1::BLAIRPlay deep...Mon Jan 28 1991 11:4914

    Well, I ain't heard it yet, but it looks and feels great! This is
    a really pretty axe. The cream coloered trim goes great with the
    gold h/w and wine (cherry?) finish. The slightly thinner body tucks
    in nicely to your own. The fretboard is so dark and smooth feeling
    that I didn't realize it was rosewood at first. Jerry is right about
    the maple grain. It looks nice under the light. The gibson promotional
    pictures do not do this guitar justice. I don't wanna go on and on
    here, I mean, it ain't a Strat!

    Just kidding Jerry.

    congrats (you rack puke!)

302.14New toys area falling like rain ...RAVEN1::JERRYWHITERoll'em-I'll just feel somethingMon Jan 28 1991 12:065
    My music store said they were gonna order one just like mine and add
    the creme trim to it. They said they'd probably kick up the price
    about $50 or so ....  8^)

    Scary (who has *no* reason to complain about tone ...)

    I just got some pictures back that I took of the LP Studio I had, I'll
    stick it in the photo album (turned out *real* nice). Which reminds me

    A photo of MY (formerly your) axe won't do it justice. You won't see
    too may LP Studios with a two piece tigered maple top. Gorgious wine
    finish, ebony fingerboard with inlays, finished off with gold hardware.
    Actually I like it without the binding found on the customs or the
    deluxes. Why anyone would trade it in on a pickup truck is beyond me.

    Scary, are you gonna put a picture of your truck in there too?

    The LP is definitely a honey. The store where I bought that one is
    selling a good many of 'em *just* like mine, but none of them have
    tops anywhere close to Jim's.

    I'm glad Jim's getting some use out of it - that was my main reason for
    selling it. Great guitar, just didn't see much action. The truck sees
    action *daily* and turns just as many heads ... 8^)

    Scary (who sold a BUNCH of stuff, but kept enough to play in a club ..)

    Cruising the WantAds I came across a Studio with a walnut finish. I
    remember a Bob Marley? poster that showed this guitar, looked really
    nice.

    There are also ads for Studio's with binding, fancy tops, etc.

    I need a new score card, 'cuz I can't distinguish the players. 8-)
