Has anyone had any experiences with a "POWER SOAK" ?
I think I understand the theory behind this unit, but how good
or bad is it (is it really), for the amp and speakers ? I
can't understand how cranking my amp from 50-80watts with a
power soak isn't going to do some damage to something. The real
question I want to know is... is it worth the chance of it screwing
up my equipment ? Maybe ? Maybe not ? No problems ? I'm confused????
That's where you, the viewing public come in.
Anyone deal with the power soak before ?
Price ?
Outdated unit, that nobody uses anymore ?
Maybe I should take up RC airplanes instead of rock and roll ?
Naw...

I have never used one, but I would stay away from them, unless
you can afford to replace your amps often. The power soak takes
some of the power your amp is producing and drops it across some
huge wire-wound resistors, thus changing the overall load on the
power amp section. While this will not hurt your speakers at all,
it will accellerate the life of your amp. Granted, you can change
tubes cheap enough, but amps still contain other components that
will wear out, that can't be replaced except by a qualified
repairman at great expense. There are so many ways of getting
raw sound today, its just not worth putting your amp through
so much abuse.

I used one heavily for about 3 years on a 100w Marshall. I did
experience some problems with the amp that *may* have been caused
by the Powersoak - don't know. However, I did end up replacing
tubes much more frequently than normal during those three years.
A couple of years ago, I heard that Marshall was voiding their
warrantee if you opperated the amp with a Powersoak. If that's
true, it certainly doesn't encourage you to use one.
BTW - My Marshall seems to be just fine now, although I do not use
the Powersoak any longer - In fact, since I got my Mesa Boogie,
I hardly ever use the Marshall... wanna buy one?

DON'T USE ONE. Burns output transformers for lunch.
But...I have a power soak schematic, if ya want one.
