300.0. "I'm making this up as I go ..." by CSSE::CLARK (I'm not Beethoven) Fri Jul 17 1987 17:03

I'm curious about improvising. How do you do it? What got me
started was a GP interview with jazz great Herb Ellis in which
he was complaining about today's players all playing too fast.
His advice was to sing everything you play softly to yourself
as you're playing. If you can't sing it, you're playing too fast.
That made a lot of sense to me. It's not easy to do, either, but
it really breaks you out of playing scales and modes. It's inter-
esting to see how what you sing falls into the harmonic structure
of what you're playing over. Does anybody else do this?

I took WJB's advic and listened to the recent GP record of Paul
Gilbert (Racer X). Is this 'speed metal'? I could probably sing
this if I was given enough speed and had electric current being
applied to my nether regions. I just hear technique for its own
sake here. (I know, Bill, what's wrong with technique for its
own sake?) I guess it's just diffrent strokes for different folks.

    How do YOU improvise?

    Dave,

Aren't you the guy who "reprised" "Starship Trooper" (after my band)
at Winterjam and did the solo with 96th note triplets over "Wurm"?

Or am I mistaking you for someone else?

yeah, that was me. I don't always practice what I preach, of course.
It takes more maturity to play a little slower. I'm more mature
now than I was in January :-). (I'm 30 today!)

    Happy Birfday Dave.

FYI, Paul Gilbert and his band are neat for chops city, but Chris
Impelletteri is the guy to listen to for 'speed metal'. This guy
was refused a job as Malmsteen's replacement because he played
"Too fast". makes you think, huh?

In case you hadn't noticed, Guitar Player is devoting its next issue
    to ...

    SPEED!

    How to get it
How to use it to pick up gurls
    How to play ridiculously fast
    etc.
