My electric's got twin Schaller (sp?) humbuckers. The 'A' string in particular sounds 'dead' in certain areas but only when doing a pull off ... sounds fine when using a pick. The action is a little strange still (set it myself and don't know much about that) but plays well. Anyway, there's little hex screws (I think 12) on each pick up and I got a allen wrench that fits those screws in the pick up's box. What are those for? Hate to (WON'T!) start turning those li'l gizmos and have the whole thing fly apart. Their location, etc. suggests that they would be used for some type of adjustments. Probably should take the guitar to a good shop for adjustments and all but hate to not know what they're doing. Anybody got any answers? AA

Yes, the screws on the pickups are for adjustment. Try taking the screw on the A string up and see how it sounds. I'm not expert, but I am not afraid to take "my" guitars a part.

Are you sure the pickups are "Schaller". Schaller makes tuning machines, but I don't think they make pickups. You probably have Schecter pickups. Go ahead and try adjusting them up until all strings have an even sound level. The way that I usually do this is by using something with vu or totem pole meters on it like a mixer or tape recorder. Schaller most definitely does make pickups. Kramer uses them on some of their instruments.

well, no one seems to have answered his question... the hex nuts you refered to are used to adjust the proximity of a given string's proprietary magnet to the mag field produced by that string. The adjustment of a given magnet will not break or damage the guitar (assuming you're not going to use a hammer), just change the sound. The closer a given magnet is to the string, the stronger the signal passed to the amp. You can try adjusting the A, but it may or may not correct your "dead" problem. Jon (BPOV02::NELSON) |
