170.0. "Rickenbackers....back in fashion?" by HERMES::CLOUD (Cyberpunk) Mon Feb 17 1986 18:37

       I've noticed quite a few bands playing the old Rickenbacker
    guitars lately, and I was wondering....were these good guitars
    when they came out? I remember seeing them being used with the
    older groups, but have just recently seen them being used again,
    primarily by the guitarist in the Bangles. Any comments?

i don't know how good they are, but....

they look great, i think their designers were way ahead of their time.

they were "the 12 string electric" for the longest time.

basses can still be found in the want advertiser, and Mr. C's in marlboro
has one you can play with if your interested.

are they still in business?

    They are still in business. I tried one of their six string electrics
    a couple of years ago. They are very good if you are seeking a clean
    twangy sound.

	I came across a lefty 12 string Rick in Daddy's Junky (Salem, NH).
	Nice instrument. I would really have liked to have bought it but
	lack of funds.....

	Rickenbacker has been around for a long time. I believe they
	started out making Electro Hawaiian Guitars back in the 20s.
	As a matter of fact, I saw one of these advertised in the local
	paper recently. $350 with an amp.

   I had a Rick 2001 (I think that's the model number) which is the 6 string
   version of the 4001 bass (the standard "Rickenbacker Bass"). Nice guitar,
   except for a few minor things. It had two very large single coils which
   gave it a pretty good sound, but only *one* good sound (I like versitility).
   It also had a somewhat weird "feature": a completely FLAT fingerboard.
   No curve (or "radius" if you want to be exact) at all. And it was of a
   "regular" width, too - that is, not excessively wide like a classical
   guitar's fingerboard. It was "different" using that guitar after playing
   other's.

170.6The Progressive Sound!CAM1::ZNAMIEROWSKIMarmalade, I like Marmalade...Thu Feb 20 1986 22:148
    Ricky basses are good for a progressive sound, ie, one where the
    bass is prominent (Rush, Yes) cos' they are a bit twangyier but
    also fuzzy at the same time. (!) Then again Lemmy of Motorhead
    uses one... (I just *can't* understand why Motorhead haven't had
    a #1 yet!...=) )

    Belisle's is further south on Elm St., right after, and on the same
    side of the street as Victory Common. Music Factory is on Amherst St.
    in the old Rex Theater building (near the old Union Leader building).

   Earcraft, in Dover NH, also carries Ricks. I haven't been by there in a
few weeks, but usually they have 5-6 hanging on the walls, 6 and 12 string
models.

   Additionally, the Guitar Warehouse in Newington, NH also carries Ricks,
but they only have a single 360-12 in stock right now. (neat guitar, but is
it worth $1000? not right now...)

170.15Yes I was weak. SOLVIT::OLOUGHLINThe fun begins at 80!Thu Jan 02 1992 08:5124

    Last Tuesday Deb and went music store crashing. Hit 7 shops.

    I saw the Ricken at Belise in Manchester. Set in a glass case,
    a 12 string. Work of art. I had a pocket of money with me so
    when I looked at Deb for a nod of approval, (to mess around abit)
    she reminded me of a 5k cash outlay coming up.

    So clear thinking saved me from adding yet another to the living
    room.

    The last shop I went to, or at least TRIED to go to, was The Music
    Emporium<sp> at Porter Sq. They closed about 30 minutes before we got
    there. Lucky thing also. I saw some Dobro's and National Steel's
    on the wall. I would have been hard pressed not to wip out bucks
    before Deb could have tackled me and dragged me out kicking and
    screaming.

    So how is it that Tom gets them from the factory?

    Rick.

170.18question for the Rick experts..FDCV08::GOODWINThu Oct 22 1992 16:1211
    I'm curious to know how 'deep' the Rick 381 bodies are... they're
    the ones that have a 330 like general shape, but with a carved top.

    I know the 360's are 'thinline' semihollow bodies, and the 381 has
    a deeper body, but I'm wondering how much deeper..is it, for instance,
    as deep as a Gibson ES-335?

    Also, what is the price for a 381 relative to say a 360?

    Thanks,
    Steve
170.19381RANGER::WEBERFri Oct 23 1992 07:3011
    The 381 is 1.5" at the rim, which is slightly smaller than a 335, but
    steps up to 2.5", which makes them fairly thick (and heavy) for this
    type of guitar.

    Although they look stunning, I'm not convinced they're really an
    improvement over the 360. My 381-12 V64 is darker sounding than my
    360WB was, and seems to have a little less sustain. I don't find the
    body to be as comfortable either. Still, it's one of my more unusual
    instruments, and fun to play when I'm in the mood.

170.20FDCV09::GOODWINFri Oct 23 1992 11:2115
Danny,

Thanks for the info... the 381's are very nice looking, but that ridge
on the top does look like it would be less comfortable than the smooth
rounded edge on the 360. The heavier weight might not be a disadvantage
on the 12 though... I've got a 360/12VP (vintage pickups) and one of my
complaints about it is that the headstock with 12 tuning machines has a
tendency to 'fall' because the body is light.. it's not as balanced as
I'd like. The six string model probably wouldn't have that problem.

Another nit I have with Ricks in general is that the necks run straight
off the body... I find Gibsons with a slight angle back are much more
comfortable to hold and play. Just my preference though.

/Steve

	Well I haven't been in here in a while, but... due to certain policies,
I can not post here in response to the mention of my ability to get NEW
Rickenbackers from the factory...
	But since I am considered a Rickenbacker authority, and have posessed
many of these guitars, please feel free to contact me if you are looking at
Rickenbackers, or need information about them, or want to know what a good
price is for a new one, where to find what you are looking for, model
information, replacement parts etc...
	I even have some color posters with all the models on them,
and last years price lists, if anyone's interested.
