I've been going to a lot of these lately and, though they
can be a lot of fun, it often gets ....er...uh....confused...
and...uh....muddled....not to mention loud. Get 5 guitarists
in one small room with cranked amps and seperate abilities
and musical interests and you have........a lot of noise.
What seems to help best is when people takes turns.
one drummer, a bassplayer and 2 guitars and a keyboardist.
one drummer a bass, 1 guitar, 2 keys....
these work fine.
but, 1 drummer, no bass, 6 keys and 2 guitars gets muddled.
as does 1 drummer, a bass, 5 guitars and no keys.
If everyone (depending, of course, on th enumber of participants)
is willing to take turns playing, swapping around with different
people, it works best and the most fun is had by all.
I went to a jam at Butch Leitz's with Dave Clark on guitar,
Fred waible on guitar, Joe ????? on bass, Dave ????on bass,
and, instead of my adding to the confusion, I spent most of the
night singing. Joe and Dave switched on bass, and I played a few
tunes on guitar but most of the night I sang and had a real good
time doing it.
Also, I'm virtually available for any weekend or any evening.
so, let me know when it happens and I can probably make it.

We're two months away from the one year anniversary of the infamous
Pearl Harbor Day jam.
I'm willing to coordinate a jam session in the mid November time frame
at my place in Marlboro. My previous jam sessions generally started as electric
stuff in the early afternoon tapering off to acoustic stuff in the late
afternoon and early evening. I usually had a good time.
Think about it. Maybe a day dedicated to all-acoustic would work
better. Our answer to the COMMUSIC MIDI jams.

| Ok. Thats all I can stands, I can't stands n'more.
I'm going to set a date for a weekend and hope someone shows up. Since
everyone seems to be talking/noteing and not doing, here it goes.
My place,
Acoustic jam.
Dunstable, Mass. 638 Hollis St. on OCT 11'th starting at 1:30 pm.
Directions:
From NH:
RT 3 and exit at RT 111A west. There will a LARGE A
frame house on a bend in the road, this is Groton rd.
which becomes Hollis St. Look for DAVIDSON on the
mailbox on the right side of the road.
From MA:
RT 495 and go north on RT 119, Littleton Common, until
you get to Groton downtown. Turn right at Hollis St.,
orange barell deviding the road, and go until you come
to RT 113. Turn left and go a ways until you come to
a big open field on the right at Hollis St. Stay on
the main road until you come to a Y in the road, take
a right. There will be a road that turns right where
there will be cows normally eating out of a feed bin,
that is NOT the Y in the road. Look for DAVIDSON on
the mailbox on the left.
If anyone needs better directions I have some maps that I could
send out.
I hope to see and here some good music, especially you Sam and
Paul since I know who you are but have never seen either.

My wife was planning on going out but if there are other females

My wife even plays guitar too. Maybe we could get here to join

I had some mexican/indian friends when I lived in S. Calf. and BOY

I really enjoyed myself. I learned a few things, even though

I think there should a set of songs, not too many, that would
like to be played and then go into free-for-all, what would
you like to play next, type of session. At least that way it
would give us non-pro's a chance to get ready for some of you.
This sure gave me something to look forward to when the day I can
play half as good as Sam and Kirk.

| after reading all this interesting rambling about guitars and playing
it occured to me that there is a lot of people who like to jam in
thier spare time. however i noticed that of the people who wanted
to get together not too many were revealing as to what part of the
country (or world) they lived in. It would seem to me that the most
effective way to congregate players in an effective group to do
some serious jamming (for fun of course) would be to give your
address and some indication of what kind of style you like
namely acoustic or amplified and what kind of music you like
to listen to and play, rock, blues, country etc.
I live in Midland, Texas (thats close to the middle of nowhere)
and I have both an electric and a 12 string acoustic and I
like to rock. Due to an accident I prefer not to play electric
(the weight of my Les Paul gets unbearable after about 45 min.)
but I would be interested in getting together with someone to
jam. It could be soon if anybody lived "close" to me or it
would be ok to get a standing invitation for whenever I'm in
town as in going to school in Boston when a good break from
brain beating would be a welcome relief.
What do ya'll have to say about that?

54.38 | | KOALA::RYAN | I get mail, therefore I am | Mon Dec 17 1990 12:38 | 50 |
| Who/what I am:
I've played acoustic guitar off-and-on since high school, and
bass since college. My interests have varied over the
years, included a folk finger-picking phase, but these
days I'm focussing on rock (particularly "alternative"
rock, whatever that's supposed to mean) and mainly playing
bass. No real band experience, mostly playing along
with records. Just the last few months I've been taking
my music more seriously, taking bass lessons, practicing
regularly, doing a bit of songwriting, etc. I also play
keyboards a bit.
What I want:
In recent months my wife and I started playing semi-regularly with
a drummer and electric guitarist. We've been having trouble
getting together with them recently, but those few sessions
were an important lesson - there's no substitute in terms
of learning (or fun) for playing with real people. So, I'm
looking for folks to play with on a regular basis, say
Wednesday and/or Friday nights. I'm less interesting in
jamming (pick four chords and improvise over them for an
hour:-) than in learning to play real songs and play them
well.
Specific interests: random selection include the Cure,
REM, Talking Heads, the Police, the Clash, Joe Jackson,
some more "classic" stuff like the Who, Allman Brothers,
etc. But I'm willing to play most any kind of rock or pop.
Where I am:
I live in Pepperell, MA (near Nashua), and am willing to
travel in the Fitchburg/Lowell/Manchester triangle.
Who you are:
Drummer and guitarist or keyboardist (and maybe others)
looking for a bass player to play with/enjoy music with.
I wouldn't mind working some with just a drummer, actually -
I need to work on being part of a rhythm section and
not playing so much like a guitarist. I'm not interested
in playing with druggies, or anyone who thinks drinking is
an essential part of the musical experience (just people
for whom the music itself is enough of a "high").
If you're interested, send me mail at KOALA::RYAN.

It has only been the two of us but we sound pretty good and
its always good for a couple laughs. I would be interested in
just getting together just to jam or if something more serious
would come out of it we will see what happens. We have been
playing what we know which includes The Stones, Clapton, Inxs
V.H., Doobies, Beatles, ect. We like all types of music and
we got a place to do it. It would be in the Fithcburg area
and we there is no neighbors to be bothered So lets do it,
anyone any level, Guitarist's, Keyboardist's, Singers, lets

Greetings. In addition to whatever may happen for a formal DECjam, I
propose that we rent a hall and have an informal jam, along the lines
of IceJam (DecibelJam?), but with a tad more organization.
By more organization, I mean not having 12 guitar players on at one
time, using Notes to chat about some possible tunes to jam to, and
keeping the volume to a reasonable (i.e. not painful) level.
Is the NF+G still available for Friday nights for what, $50? I'm game
to pick a Friday in May, front the $50, and then have people who attend
the jam kick in so that I don't get completely hosed. Fellow noter Tom
Proulx said he will help to organize this gala event, too.
What say ye?

| Yeah good idea, but one thing I've been thinking about recently is a
get together between us that isn't limited to a jam. I've been thinking
about a workshop between us. I've never met nor have I seen the
Buckmeister, but I'm told of his legend. I'd like to see/hear some of
the tips that have been presented in these notesfiles that are
difficult to comprehend because of the medium, like whosis asking about
the "chucka-towe, chucka-towe" tone and other such guitar speak.
And we all have something to show somebody, even if it isn't a lesson
per se. Perhaps it could be as simple as a well known riff, or some
original tune that you been working on, or fingerpicking, or whatever.

I'm in favor of the proposals from both Dave and Kevin. Maybe
we can organize something like a softball league?? where we
find some regularly usable space and do regular jamming.
We can hand out charts 2 weeks in advance, select the bands for
the next jam and see how they do putting together a show...

I'm all for a jam, as long as it's not a free for all noise fest. I'd hope to learn something
along the way besides how to go to "11". ;-)
Anybody up for a Guitarnotes dinner outing? We could use it as a "strategy"
session. A lunch would be possible, but hard to coordinate. Commens?

I'm looking for a fellow acoustic guitarist/singer to jam with
occassionally.
Lately, I've playing tunes by Dylan, Cat Stevens, Grateful Dead,
Eagles, Neil Young, John Gorka, John Prine etc. I'm basically
a hacker looking for a fellow hacker to get ideas from and
have some fun.
I'm in the Nashua NH area.

| A few replies back, someone mentioned starting something like a
softball league for DECcie guitarists, and I thought that sounded
pretty f'in cool! It's been awhile since that reply. Is anyone still
interested? I would be. I can't play a whole lot of tunes, but I can
pick up a riff pretty quick. Plus I think it would be great to have
a regular place that anyone who wanted to could go to jam or just
listen.

I'm into it. So where do we get space? Should we rent out
a VFW hall once a month or something? Get sponsorships
from the local beer distributor? Anybody else wanna ride this
bus?

The band I'm in is involved with a jam session this Sunday at the Tiki
Lau restaurant/lounge in Westford, Mass. from 1:30 to 6. The bass
player in my band is really the contact person for the jam, but I do
know that it's open to everybody and there will be some available gear
(pa, couple of amps, drum kit).
So, bring your guitar/bass/what-have-you and hit the stage!
Some *very* good players from bands that work the Tiki are supopsed to be
there, so it could be a good time. How it will be organized is a
mystery to me, but I know my bass player is working on it. 8-)
There is a good chance that my JCM900 will be there as one of the
"house" amps.

FYI, the jam session yesterday at the Tiki Lau restaurant/lounge was a
*great* time! Players from the bands that work the Tiki (including
me) went at it for 5 hours. It reminded me of a DECjam because there
were no volume wars, so ego outbursts or grandstanding. Just folks
taking turns on stage and having a good time. A bunch of people from
the audience got up to sing and play, too.
It wasn't just 1-4-5, either. With all of the bands' song lists it was
pretty easy to pick out songs that we could do. I had heard all of the
other bands before but I never had the chance to jam with any of the
members, so this was fun. We took 20 minute turns and then the next
"group" got up.
The bar owner *loved* it because there was a good crowd there all
afternoon when it would normally have been near empty.

54.66 | jam? | GOOROO::CLARK | asymptotically normal | Tue Nov 12 1991 16:33 | 9 |
| Anybody in the central MA area up for jamming on some blues/
jazz/swing tunes? I'm currently 'between bands' (probably for
quite a while) but I still have the urge to do something besides
play in my living room. I'd like to steer clear of too much
SRV, Allman Brothers, blues-rock stuff and play more jazzy,
sophisticated blues. Send me mail if you're interested in
hooking up.
thanks - Dave
