1195.0. "Missing death - possibly in USA" by SNOFS1::JOYCEJENNY (Still crazy after all these years) Mon May 19 1997 22:33

My g-g-g-grandmother, Sarah Highett (nee Moore) died on 30th April 1883
according to the probate of her will, but there is no record of her
death (on any date) in Victoria, which is where she lived, nor is she
    buried together with her husband.

I have checked all other Australian states with no success, and I have
also checked the St. Catherine's House indexes with no success, but since
she had a son who lived (at least some of the time) in San Diego, I
wondered whether she might have died while visiting him there.

What I need to know is how I would go about checking on a death in
America. I have not been able to find any indexes or anything like
    that here in Sydney.

Would anyone have an address I could write to to see if she did die
    there?

    If you check

       http://www.cdc.gov/nchswww/howto/w2w/californ.htm

there are some addresses and info on obtaining Califoria vital records
information. However, they only have records since July 1905 and
refer you to the Counties for earlier information.

The USGenWeb project at does have a page listing San Diego County vital
    information at

    	http://www.compuology.com/cagenweb/sdieglok.htm

There is also a person on that page who will look up obituaries in your
    timeframe.
