1187.15 | FTM V3.4 on Web Site | TGRAPH::WEGG | Some hard boiled eggs and some nuts. | Wed Apr 16 1997 04:50 | 21 |
| I haven't seen this mentioned before, Family Tree Maker has a Web Site at:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/
It appears that the latest version of FTM is 3.4. The major new feature is
the ability to produce narrative reports:
| New Genealogy Reports
| Family Tree Maker version 3.4 has three new reports to offer for
| automatically generating family journals: Register, NGS Quarterly,
| and Ahnentafel.
The WEB site also has a search facility which enables you to look for names
contained in their numerous CD "Super Bundles", which includes US Censuses,
Registration indexes, Church records and 7 CD's of "World Family Tree". I did
a search on WEGG (not unnaturally!) and found that my great grandfather's name
appears in the "World Family Tree", i.e. is in a tree submitted by an FTM user.
I'm not sure how many of these packages are available in the UK.

I'll answer my own question now. All the Broderbund packages
are available from S&N Genealogy Supplies. They have FTM V3.4
for 34.60 including VAT and P&P - or 31.67 if you catch up
with them at a Family History Fair, as I did.
They have two web sites:
http://www.genealogy.demon.co.uk/
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Genealogy_Supplies/homepage.htm
I think they have muddled them somehow, the compuserve pages
seem to be more up to date but the links to them are from the
demon account.
I'm very pleased with FTM V3.4. As well as the narrative
reports, it also allows you to add you own "home page" on
their Web site.

1187.17 | All the way back to 1500's up in smoke. | JULIET::ROYER | Greening up our lives. | Wed May 07 1997 19:18 | 13 |
| Well my FTM appears to be history. My PC (DEC433DXlp) was destroyed in
a fire in my home. My hard drive is not responding to the new pc that
I have, and I will attempt to put it into one of the DEC pc's here at
work, and hope that I can access the data. IDE vs EIDE may be the
problem, and that may be a solution.
If not the trick is to locate the records that I had, some copies are
in the Archives in Augusta, ME. And there are more in Quebec, PQ.
Then the task of data entry.... oh woe is me!
Thank God no one was hurt.

CNN just did a spot on disk drive recovery. Seems the the
company that does it is very busy with the aftermath of all
the flooding in the midwest.

1187.19 | As is well that ends well. | JULIET::ROYER | Greening up our lives. | Mon May 12 1997 13:16 | 6 |
| Good news, I am able to access the old disk drive without problem. I
do not have to do the research that I have entered into the PC.
Digital made good drives. It was a RE23L-E, and tho it smells smoky
the data is intact.

| Dave,
Good news indeed, I bet you're relieved. How many backups
have you made now? :-)

| well, so far only one backup, but I want to copy everything off of the
124 MB drive to the 2.5 GB drive. Then I will be able to save the
secondary hard drive as a bootable device somewhere else.

| Hmmm - methinks I'll toss a backup tape into my safety deposit box next
time I visit it... Glad to hear that your drive survived the fire,
sorry to hear that it happened at all.
