| I thought I'd open this back up. Since Windows 95 has come out since
the last entry.
I have a Scanpaq 2400 24 bit color flat bed scanner that I use for both
pictures and OCR conversion of text. The price got to the point I took
the plunge. I have done some scanning for friends.
Text conversion using the Caere Limited Edition that came with the
scanner is pretty good. Good enough that I'm not yet ready to spend as
much on upgraded (improved) software that I paid for the scanner.
Picture quality is very respectible. I convert almost everything to
.jpg files for easy e mailing and storage on floppy, however I do have
capabilities to store larger files on a Zip drive.
I still have not with the software I have figured out how to save the
image file for text properly.
It has saved me great time entering text that I want to keep associated
with my genealogy research. For example I have copies of 100 year old
newspapers that I have scanned and saved as word documents.
Scanning newspapers only works if you strip out the article as a column
and scann it that way. The OCR software doesn't know how to handle
mulitple column text.
I will scan and store for a resonable fee if anyone is interested. I
can send you a copy of some of my scans to look at.
I have one picture of my father taken when he was 3 at his fathers
funeral. The picture had been pressed against the glass and pealed off
some of the picture coating. I scanned it in and am using paint to
recreate the picture. I will need to get someone with more artistic
talent to recreate the nose, but I will end up with something I don't
now have, a picture of my father as a child. Ain't technology grand.
