| When the original release of DECtalk Software V4.2A for Digital UNIX was
released it was built to run on a UNIX V3.2x system with every intent for
it to work on a UNIX V4.0x system. At the time of release, UNIX V3.2c and
a pre-release version of UNIX V4.0 was available for testing. At that time
everything worked well. Since then we've noticed some discrepencies in the
POSIX threads in UNIX V4.0 and it was known that the threads package might
not be 100% compatable between the major releases of UNIX. So I believe this
is the problem that you are seeing on UNIX V3.2d.
We have fixed this problem and have added a few enhancements and are planning
on releasing DECtalk V4.3 soon. You should talk to Anne Simoneau at
DECTLK::SIMONEAU (probably [email protected] after she gets
"exchanged" ..)
and see when she plans on shipping this version. Once a field test kit
is available we'll post it in this conference.

| Using the t4.3 kit, when I do:
% say -fi test.in -fo test.au
say hangs with a zero-length file, test.au, being created.
The file test.in contains:
testing testing testing

| I assume this is the Unix kit.. which I'm not wildly familiar with..
but..
does it work if you put a period and a space at the end of that input
file?

| Yup T4.3 is installed on DUNIX V3.2D.
"say" still hangs after adding a ". " to the end of the input file.

| Have you tried to install the final kit of DECtalk? I noticed
that you had installed the field test version. The reason I ask
is that I am running UNIX V4.0A and have V4.3 of DECtalk installed.
Saying 'it works for me' doesn't solve your problem - but I do
know that there were major thread changes in UNIX from V3.2x to V4.0x
and the final version of the DECtalk kit should have taken that into
account. I also know that there were problems with UNIX V3.2D when
it first came out, so upgrading to a newer version of UNIX will
solve your problem.
