1532.0. "Can't access Oracle on-line documents" by DONVAN::HARRIS () Mon Mar 17 1997 12:14

	I am trying to get familiar with OPS to help put together some
	TruCluster training. As such, I just installed Oracle Parallel
	Server, V 7.3.2.1.0 on a system running Digital UNIX V4.0 (rev 386).
	Since completing the install, I've had troubles accessing the on-line
	documentation.

	When I type...
	  oradoc
	I get a quasi-window terminal, but can never access any of the
	menus at the top of the screen.

	When I type...
	  cd /Layers/Oracle/app/oracle/product/7.3.2/orainst
	  oradocm
	I first get the error...
	  /Layers/Oracle/app/oracle/product/7.3.2/orainst//Layers/Oracle/
	  app/oracle/product/7.3.2/orainst/ob: No such file or directory

	When I try...
	  cd /
	  /Layers/Oracle/app/oracle/product/7.3.2/orainst/oradocm
	I get the error...
	  Startup of Oracle Book failed.
	  Check your ORACLE_HOME setting.

	Some of my environment variables are listed below:

	  HOME=/Layers/Oracle/app/oracle/product/7.3.2
	  SHELL=/usr/bin/csh
	  PATH=/Layers/Oracle/app/oracle/product/7.3.2/orainst:
	          /sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin/X11
	  USER=Oracle
	  ORACLE_HOME=/Layers/Oracle/app/oracle/product/7.3.2
	  ORACLE_TERM=vt100
	  ORACLE_SID=1
	  DISPLAY=16.30.16.251:0.0
	  TERM=vt300

	Any suggestions???

	Peggy

    re .0 - couple of comments

    >When I type...
    >  cd /Layers/Oracle/app/oracle/product/7.3.2/orainst
    >  oradocm
    >I first get the error...
    >  /Layers/Oracle/app/oracle/product/7.3.2/orainst//Layers/Oracle/
    > app/oracle/product/7.3.2/orainst/ob: No such file or directory

    Explanation for this behavior:
    When you have a look at the file 'oradocm' you'll see it is actually a
    sh script that sets up the environment before calling the Motif based
    Oracle book viewer. Now checking your PATH setting you'll find you have
    '$ORACLE_HOME/orainst' there but you don't have '.' in your path. Which
    means if you type 'oradocm' your shell will pick
    '$ORACLE_HOME/orainst/oradocm'. Now the first thing this script does is
    using the command path '$0' to determine where it was called from;
    which in your case will tell the script a wrong location. The script
    actually assumes you did a 'cd $ORACLE_HOME/orainst; ./oradocm'. Remove
    '$ORACLE_HOME/orainst' from your PATH and start from there.

    Now if you try as I suggested you will see the error message:

      Startup of Oracle Book failed.
      Check your ORACLE_HOME setting.

    Well this error message is not very helpful. In fact it has nothing to
    do with the cause of the problem. Oracle Motif based tools have a
    problem running on 4.0x. The problem is caused by the fact that all
    Oracle Motif tools seem to have the path '/usr/lib/X11/nls' hardcoded
    for I18N support. Now that directory does not exist in X11R6 which
    is the X11 implementation in any D'Unix 4.0x. The good news is: just
    creating an empty directory '/usr/lib/X11/nls' will fix the problem
    starting Oracle Motif based tools.

    Btw it took me some time and a close look at 'strings svrmgrm' to
    finally find this work around. And another hint: make sure to apply all
    required Oracle patches before you try and run on 4.0x.
    Cheers

    Boy, was this frustrating me. Thanks for figuring this out, Martin.
