1515.0. "relocate drd with OPS running" by DYOSW5::WILDER (Does virtual reality get swapped?) Wed Feb 19 1997 08:35
What does Oracle OPS do if while it is running, a drd service get
relocated through the asemgr? Will OPS crash, retry, error out, or
what? What if we modify the drd service while OPS is running? Modifying
the service will result in the service stopping, being deleted, being
added, and then restarted. What happens in this case? Anyone know??
Thanks,
/jim

1. Relocating a drd service while Oracle OPS is running will not do any
harm. In fact this is what we usually do to demo OPS on TruCluster.
The Oracle kernel does not have any idea about what a drd is; the
rdrd devices look like ordinary raw disks to Oracle. So the worst
thing that may happen during a drd service relocation is the I/O
Oracle is issuing during that time will 'hang' in the Unix kernel.
As far as I know Oracle has thresholds for I/O timeouts but I never
ran into them during a drd service relocation.
2. Reconfiguring a drd service is a different story though. I never
actually tried this with OPS up and running. But one thing indicates
you are heading for trouble when you try this: modifying a drd
service will cause the ownership of all /dev/rdrd/drd* entries to be
reset from oracle:dba to root:system.
Hope this helps
