5372.0. "New AMIGA archive available" by AMIGA::RIES (MACINTOSH = Machine Always Crashes If Not The Operating System Hangs) Fri Jan 24 1992 22:56

Announcing yet another AMIGA archive!

Over the past couple of months I have been collecting vast quantities
of AMIGA software via usenet. Most of what I have collected has come from
ab20.larc.nasa.gov, but I have also obtained stuff from other places as
well. I have nearly EVERYTHING from ab20.larc.nasa.gov, except the
comp.binaries.amiga and comp.sources.amiga directories (thats just too
much stuff!). All in all I currently have about 250MB of stuff!

I am a big fan of tracker music and euro demos, so I have specifically
concentrated on getting all I can of each. I have over 30MB of tracker
modules, and over 100MB of euro demos!

The directory structure that I have put together closely resembles that
of ab20 for those of you who might have checked ab20 out.

It has taken alot of work to put all this stuff together, and I am now
making it available to everyone. Since these files exist on a lowly
MicroVAX II which is clustered to my workstation, I will have to place
some restrictions on when these files can be accessed, since the machine
is used for other things.

The files are on:    CANIS::C$AMIGA:[AMIGA...]
and can be accessed anytime except Monday - Friday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

The files in [AMIGA.INCOMING...] are files that I have snarfed from
various places and have not had time to catagorize yet. The stuff in
there will get moved elsewhere in [AMIGA...] when I get around to it.

If your into tracker music, check out [AMIGA.MUSIC.MODULES...],
and if your into euro demos, check out [AMIGA.DEMOS.EURO...].

If you have any tracker modules or euro demos that you don't find here,
I'd like to encourage you to upload them so I can add them to the
collection. The directory [AMIGA.INCOMING.DEC] is writable so you can
put them there.

Its my goal to go through most of this stuff and catagorize it the
best I can, and toss out the stuff that either doesn't seem to work or
seems of little value.

I have been concentrating of the tracker music, and am getting it in
pretty good shape. I have been checking out each song that I get,
and trying to catagorize them by type, such as MED, ProTracker,
SoundTracker etc. I have also rearchived everything in LHA format
and placed one song per archive with the archive name matching the
song title (as best as can be done given file naming restrictions).
The file [AMIGA.MUSIC.MODULES.SONGS]SONGS.LIST contains a listing
of all the songs. This file lists the songs title, author (if known),
tracker type (if known), playing time and a comment. The comment
gives my rating of the song, Best, Good, Fair and Poor. This list
is evolving and still needs some work.

I plan on doing the same sort of thing with the demos. As I go
through them I will be renaming them so that the filename reflects
the group that created the demo and the name of the demo. I also
hope to put a list together that describes each demo and what
requirements it has in order to run. This will be a major task
since there are so many of them, and most are disk archives which
must be restored to floppies and booted. I'd appreciate any help :-)

Almost all the demos want a PAL display, and most will not run on an
accelerated machine. I have an A2500 with a 68030, and in order to
run nearly all the demos must boot from the 68000. I have installed
a switch so that I can have the machine boot in either NTSC or PAL
mode (must have an ECS Agnus to do this, real simple mod). If you are
into demos, this is a must. There are PALBOOT programs, but I have
found these to be a pain and they don't always work.

I will upload a directory listing of CANIS::C$AMIGA:[AMIGA...] to
EOT:: as CANIS_FILES.LIS. You can check this file out to see what
stuff is available there.

It is not my intention to have this archive be in any way an alternative
to EOT::. Please continue to use EOT:: as before.

Enjoy!

CANIS is in Littleton, Mass USA, so its Eastern time.

If the access rate is not too bad I may change access to 24hrs. I'll
have to wait and see. I hope this restriction isn't too inconvenient.
