5361.0. "I can't get it all in!" by NEWOA::MORAN (IT Management Services) Tue Jan 21 1992 09:45

Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I've spent about half an hour
searching through the conf. directory for an appropriate note.

Not being hardware oriented, I've encountered a problem when trying to install
my 2088 bridgeboard, 5.25" floppy, hard disk (20mb ST125) and seperate hard
controller into a friends 2000. The problem is, that he already has 2x internal
3.5" floppies and I've no-where to place the hard disk.

On my system, I only had one internal 3.5" floppy and the hard drive was
in the empty internal floppy bay. Would anyone have any ideas where I can
install the hard disk internally?

Any help would be gratefully apreciated.

    You didn't say what kind of disk controller you have. I assume the
    ST125 is a 3.5" hard disk (since it fit in the floppy drive space),
    which means you MIGHT be able to mount it directly on the hard disk
    controller card (making it a "hard card"), as new A2000HD systems do.
    Put the disk controller in the Zorro-2 slot nearest the power supply
    and diskette drives.

    Sorry, The controller is of unknown origin (there's no markings on it),
    but it has to be placed in one the the XT slots. The hard drive is 3.5"
    and I'll have a look into mounting it on the controller, but there didn't
    seem to be enough room when I looked yesterday. I'll give it a try though.

    Thanks.

5361.3External Disk box CX3PT3::WSC017::A_ANDERSONCSC32::A_Anderson NSU/VAX DTN 592-4170Tue Jan 21 1992 12:324
Is the disk and controller for the Bridge Board or the Amiga. In any case
sounds like you will need an external disk box. Look into Computer Shopper
these things go for $50.00 to $200.00 depending on how much room/power supply
needed. Plus long cables to reach.

    Well, the controller fits into an XT slot, so I think that the disk
    and controller are indeed for the Bridge Board,

    I guess that you're right when you said that an external disk box is
    required. Seems a shame though. With a box that big you'd of thought
    you could get a couple of RA92s in there!

    Thanks for your help.

5361.5Sorry everything has its limits CX3PT2::WSC017::A_ANDERSONCSC32::A_Anderson NSU/VAX DTN 592-4170Tue Jan 21 1992 13:166
Theres only room for one 1/2 height 5.25 inch and two 3.5 inch drives in the
drive bays. There is a little room for a hardcard. Other than that you
have to expand. It would probably be easier to place the Brodge boards
floppy in an external enclosure (one 34 pin cable) then the harddisk (34 pin
and a 20 pin cablen unless SCSI).

    Well, what I did end up doing was to take out DF1: and place the hard
    drive in its place. I then swapped this floppy drive for an external 3.5"
    drive. It seemd the easiest/cheapest way (cost nowt!).

    Thanks for your help,
