5344.0. "GVP 286 board for 500HD+" by COMET::BELLMJ () Mon Jan 13 1992 22:20

    GVP, apparently, has created a 16 MHz 286 computer that fits in the
    mini-slot of the A500HD+. From what the gentleman there said, it has
    512k built in, and uses whatever else you have in the GVP SIMM slots,
    and multitasks.

    When asked how well it multitasks, he said that GVP had bought patents
    from another manufacturer, and simply re-engineered the board for use
    with their system. (wouldn't say what).

    My guess: They took a Vortex ATonce+ and put it on a bus card. I
    figure it's the only 500 286 emulator that multitasks, right?

    Well, they said the add for it would be in Feb '92 AmigaWorld...can
    some subscriber please fill in the details of the ad? (it hasn't hit
    the stores yet).

    I figured I'd start a base note for it...

    Only work with new Impact II A500-HD+. No release date yet. It will

     I thought the bit about the 68040 card for the slot in the a500 hd
    addon was a missprint , I can't see much of a market , I'd imagine
    the cost will be prohibitivley expensive for 500 owners as it could be
    upto 4-5 times the price of the 500 itself.

    Having said that , if any one sees any pricing or availability
    announced please post it here .

    Past experiance with GVP indicates that if you order the unit for the
    500 you would get the + automatically. GVP tends to upgrade, and
    then ship whatever is the latest. I am ordering a GVP 030 card for the
    2000. Now my dealer informed me that I could no longer get a 33mhz
    card. He said that they are shipping 40mhz at the same price. So as
    you can see you always tend to get the latest whstever. However if you
    go mail order you will get the price everyone is drooling over, but
    you must be carefull to specify what you want. ie: inquire if it is
    the + version. I expect many mail order places are still shipping the
    33mhz for the 2000, and many may have a bunch of 500 units that are not
    pluses. Just state what you want.

    I don't quite understand this. They are making an adaptation of the
    ATonce for the "mini slot" which really is just the 86 pin extension of
    the bus signals, if I remember correctly.

    But they will also make an 040 accelerator to fit in the same space?
    How can you fit two more computers in that little niche, knowing one
    needs a heat sink the size of Missouri to cool it?

    I tell you, if they do make it I'm buying it! I'd just want to make
    sure both would fit.

    So no one has the Feb Amiga World?

5344.6I'll look tonight in AWATIS01::ASHFORTHWed Jan 15 1992 08:245
Sorry, I'm so used to others responding ultrafast that I didn't squirrel this
away in my mental "to do" list. I'll try to remember to peek at Feb. AmigaWorld
tonight for any mention of the new GVP board.

5344.7Don't think soSALEM::LEIMBERGERWed Jan 15 1992 09:104
    I saw the add for the PC286 board. It will occupy the buss slot in the
    500-hd8+ . I don't see any way they will be able to plug 2 cards in.
    Unless the buss has a passthru.

    Well, see, in the grand scheme of things, I want to add a PC emulator
    and an accelerator. If GVP indeed will make an 040 and two boards
    won't fit in there, I'll get it and the Atonce+.

    If the 040 board is vaporgossip, I'll get the PC286 and the VXL-30.

5344.9Report on AW AdATIS01::ASHFORTHThu Jan 16 1992 08:1611
I checked out the Feb. AmigaWorld ad for the PC286- it's part of the ad for the
HD8 (or whatever) hard drive for the 500, since the mini-slot of the hard drive
box is where the PC mini-card goes.

I don't know where the association of this box/slot/card with an '040 accelerator
came from- maybe somewhere else they've mentioned such a card which would go
into the mini-slot *instead* of the PC286?

Anyway, that's the scoop on the AW ad...

    The Feb Amiga Format says the 040 accel. card was announced in November
    at World of Commodore. THis new ATOnce card is a new announcment.

    I think the HD+ has one mini slot, so you choose, ATOnce or 040
    accelerator.

    board....

    	It's based on the Vortex's 286+ [the one with 1 meg on board and the
