5329.0. "Vr241 doesnt like Mother" by JOCKEY::LUDLAMA () Wed Jan 08 1992 05:46

I recently attached a dec vr241 to my amiga 500 but the results
    were disasterous.
I was using the monitor when suddenly the whole screen went
    grey and refused to reset.
I sent my machine back to Commodore who replaced the mother
board after about 8 weeks (Isnt that disgusting, 8 weeks).
On plugging it all back together again it worked for 2 days
and then started to show the same symptoms again, although I am not
entirely sure I think the monitor must be causing the problem as I
had no problems at all prior to using the Vr241.
I would be interested in your opinions on this,
    		Regards,
    			Arron Ludlam.

I have had a VR241-A since 24th Dec with no problems. Hope its not a
daft question but the connector has no potential short circuits,
the pin-outs for the connector show several low voltage supplies maybe?

Have you noticed any pulsing effects whilst accessing the
external/internal drives the VR241 seems to have a reduced display area
so i guess it might be more noticeable than say the Philips 8833.

I am fairly sure that there was no shorts ,however the red connection
sometimes flickered off (possibly a dodgy connection, but not a short)

5329.3Works well for me...KERNEL::TRAVELLJohn T, UK_Remote_Services_SupportWed Jan 08 1992 17:5228
I have had no problems with using a VR241 over the last year. I would suggest
that you very carefully check the cable again.

One possible problem area, have you connected the external sync to the green
signal. If so this could be your problem.

The VT240 box (and various others from DEC that can drive a VR241) send SYNC
along with GREEN, and set the VR241 to INTERNAL sync.

The AMIGA does not work that way.

You must ensure that you have 4 signal wires in the cable. 1 for each colour,
and one for the EXTERNAL SYNC signal from the AMIGA to the VR241 SYNC input
(top BNC connector).

I used a couple of surplus thin-wire ethernet cables, cut them in half, fitted
the 4 BNC connectors to the VR241, dressed the cables into a nice bundle (and
marked both ends with the relevant labels) and carefully soldered the cut ends
into a 23-pin-Din connector to plug into the AMIGA. Since these cables are 50ohm
impedance, I tried some 50 ohm thin-wire terminators on the other set of BNC
sockets on the VR241 with the "75ohm/High" switch in HIGH. I think this gives
me a marginally better picture than with the internal 75ohm termination.

Especially check that none of the wires (look for very fine strands of braid)
are touching any of the power pins in the connector. If I remember correctly,
one is quite close to the SYNC pin.

I've been using a VR241 for a few years. No problems.

Our AMI also shows up on VR241 since ~ 1 year with no
problems. I too would strongly suggest that you check
the 23 pin connector for any shorts. They can be
easyly produced by the shieldings. As someone said before
    	look for VERY fine wires.

5329.6Thanks for the memoryJOCKEY::LUDLAMAThu Jan 09 1992 05:119

Well I have checked my cable wnich I made myself and I can safely say it is
exactly the same as yours except that I used some 3mm coax for cable.
I guess I must have a different problem or one of the infamous faulty vr241
Thanks for your advice,
I think I might try again when I get my confidence back again(it is
so hard to be without my amiga for more than two days)

5329.7Flicker improvement?GVA02::SLOANwe have met the enemy and he is usThu Jan 09 1992 11:397
While we're on the subject, has anyone found a way to minimise the
flicker when using the 241 with a program such as Professional Page
    which uses interlace?

Is there an internal adjustment which might help?
