5323.0. "Byte Bandit-Any help" by SIOG::CURRAN () Mon Jan 06 1992 08:11

 I am an Amiga owner for about 2 months.
 Ive got a few FFish diskettes - one of which includes Master_Virus_KillerV2.0.
While using this MVK over the weekend it warned me that I have a virus in
memory. I get this message even after a cold start.
 On the display of the bootblock I get the message "Virus by Byte
Bandit in 9.87 number of copies". The kill virus function has no effect.
A few of my other disks are infected.

I have continued to use some of the disks that were identified as having the
virus with nothing unusual happening. In other words if I had not used the
MVK I would have assumed everything was working well.

I have a very limited knowledge about the whole system so I would appreciate
any help as to how I should treat this.
Regards
Willie

    I suggest you boot your system with a disk that you know is absolutely
    virus-free. Then start Master_Virus-Killer and check/kill your other
    disks.
    If you boot a disk which contains a (bootblock)virus, it installes
    itself in memory and detects that you try to overwrite the bootblock.
    If you do so, it just copies itself over your fresh bootblock and there
    he is again.
    (most virusses change some pointers in memory and by doing that,
    they'll survife(?) a warm-boot/reset, so switch off your computer
    before doing this....)

    P.S. sorry for my bad english. If you want to know what Byte-Bandit
    does, I can ask around.

    I have had some experience of the Byte bandit virus and have found
    the following ;
    1.Provided you switch off for 30 seconds between loading disks the
    virus will not spread.
    2.The virus can cause your disks to show a checksum error on booting.
    3.I used master virus killer to detect and kill byte bandit.
    4.Having killed the virus on disks which still appeared to work ok
    the program was not corrupted and I was able to use it again virus free
