5310.0. "New Kick ROMS in A3000 w/Tower" by SDOGUS::WILLIAMS (TOPGUN) Mon Dec 30 1991 20:28

There was a note on trouble upgrading an A3000 with tower somewhere
here, but I just can't find it and I've used title searches for A3000,
3000, HELP, etc. So here goes. The instructions for upgrading an
A3000 which has a tower are wrong! Instead do this:

Remove the case and the any boards in the slots. Remove the slot/video
board and the power supply cradel. Remove the cables which connect
everything to the cradle. Now you are at the bare board. There is a
tower in the right rear of the mother board. CAREFULLY remove the
tower and remove chips 390630-02 and 390629-02. Replace them with the
new ROMS (get the position and chips correct). Replace the Tower into
the machine (observe that the U183/U182 can only be installed correctly
one way). Put everything back together and you are set.

I've just completed a 3000 tower for a friend and it is working fine,
so this should work. If you have any questions, EMAIL me at:

    Thanks!!!

I had just pitched the new ROMS in the trash, maybe I'll go dig them
    out!

I had been installing them in U180/U181 per the instructions (serves me
right for reading the directions). I'll try this method and see if it
works. I had gotten the chips to work in this location for a bit by
adjusting the ROM timing jumpers (J151,J152) but then it stopped
    working again.

I've been running my new chips for a few days now and I've noticed some
improvements over the DISK based kickstart. Little things; fewer
    gurus, etc.

Be sure to clean up those ROMS BEFORE using them, you never know what
Garbage a ROM can get into.

I installed the ROMS on the tower and they work fine now. I thought I
tried doing that before but must not have.

    Thanks
