| Oh, I almost forgot the listing in Amiga World does not represent
all of their available software, hardware, etc... I dialed into their
BBS and extracted a 26 page listing of all their Amiga software,
and hardware products.

Can you put the 26 page listing on EOT::AMIGA:[UPLOAD] ? -mt

| Let me check with Safe Harbor, hopefully they wont mind... I'll also
ask if Safe Harbor will be willing to provide a meet or beat the
competition with all DEC employee orders.
I'll let ya know soon.

5285.5 | Hot quote on a modem | ATIS01::ASHFORTH | | Mon Dec 23 1991 10:24 | 17 |
| I couldn't find a basenote for "hot price quotes" except the one for Amigas,
nor could I find a generic modem note- this seems to be becoming a Safe Harbor
basenote, though, so I figured I'd plop this note here.
Readers of AmigaWorld may have noticed the recent Safe Harbor ad quoting $245 for
the new Supra FaxModem 9600. This sounded like such a great deal I called
Supra to doublecheck on the specs for the modem. Well, I found that (a) the
list is only $299.95, and (b) Supra is also coming out with a v.32bis/v.42bis
model which lists at $399.95! (For those not familiar with modem protocol
standards, v.32bis allows speeds up to 14,400 bps.) Safe Harbor is selling the
latter at $305, which for my money makes the upscale model a better deal.
Further info: the FaxModem 9600 is due to ship Jan. 14 '92, the 14.4K model on
Jan. 7 '92. Merry slightly-post-Xmas to me...

I don't know how hot this really is...
Modem prices/speeds are just the latest thing on THAT curve (-:
Check again next month... check computer shopper too, the I*M market
is much more cut-thro<
Also; yes, "9600fax" usually describes a modem that is
capable of 9600 baud when sending faxes, but does 2400 baud when
sending/receiving data (where every little bit counts).
Beware of such terms as "effective speed" in the ads.
They are valid claims, using compression, but if you down-load files that
are already compressed (I do, in fact I rarely down-load anything that
ISN'T compressed) it doesn't buy you anything.

5285.8 | Should do both... | HSSTPT::WILSONTL | Lead Trumpet (Read that...LEED!) | Mon Dec 23 1991 11:07 | 2 |
| I also saw the ad. It said it could send, receive FAX and also act as a 9,600
baud modem. At the $245.00 price, it caught my eye very quickly.

5285.9 | Yes, it does both... | ATIS01::ASHFORTH | | Mon Dec 23 1991 11:12 | 19 |
| Yo John-
Sorry, should have elaborated-
Yes, these fax modems "do" both fax and data comm- I've never seen one which
didn't, but maybe I've led a sheltered life... Typically, faxmodems such as those
used in laptops are of the 2400baud data/9600baud fax variety. Frankly, I have
a fax already, and view the fax capabilities of these units as gravy; the
telecomm capability is my main interest.
Also, these are external modems, *un*like any fax modems I'd seen previously.
Another "trivial detail" (at least for me) is that these include *NO FAX
SOFTWARE* at present- Supra is still shopping for a licensable product to provide
that functionality. Reportedly it will be available to purchasers of the modem at
a nominal upgrade charge.
Hope that clears things up-

5285.10 | Some background... | ATIS01::ASHFORTH | | Mon Dec 23 1991 12:08 | 28 |
| Re .7:
All quite valid points, which always makes the time to "buy into" technology a
judgement call. I've got no problem making this call for myself, though. Here's
my reasoning:
(1) I *do* track the PC shopping mags, and there's nothing which matches this.
Ballpark cheapo price for v.32 modems floats around $400 minimum, and I've seen
a "special deal" of $900 for two v.32bis modems. The latter are mighty scarce
until you get into the high-end models.
(2) While I don't follow the "standards soap opera" religiously, I stay pretty
much up-to-date on it, and I know of nothing coming down the pike in the near
future beyond v.32bis and/or v.42bis. I don't intend to ever get into a
nonstandard comm protocol, so for me I see the current wave of v.32bis/v.42bis as
a pretty stable plateau. I'd put the odds at 50/50 that any newer, faster,
bigger, better standard will be forthcoming before ISDN is commonly available
and modems themselves are obsolete.
As to future price cuts, the "big players" seem to have just gone through a round
of same, and I don't see any of them rushing to beat what seems like a fairly
drastic move on Supra's part. Worst I could see is others *matching* their price,
but not undercutting it worth noticing.
Your mileage may vary, of course, but them's my reckonin's.
