5280.0. "Looking for A1000 internal floppy drive" by PUERTO::ALVAREZ (This space for hire) Mon Dec 16 1991 21:24

My internal AMIGA 1000 floppy drive failed and I'm looking for a
    replacement.

I have to buy mail order, since there are no dealers around here. But
before going ahead, I was wondering if any of the readers had gone
through this recently and might recommend a drive to buy.

Browsing through various magazines I see AMIGA 500 & 2000 internal
drives, and the IBM PC mags have Toshiba and TEAC drives. Any
    recommendations ?

P.S. I have an external A1010 which I removed the drive, but it won't
fit inside the box being 1/2" longer and the drive that failed has no
    vendor markings or model no..

    Thanks for your help.

    Here are some solutions:

1- Get something called a "shuffle board" from ICD. Your internal
drive is disabled and your first external drive becomes DF0.
You can now add another external drive which will be DF1 and
all these things will probably cost less than an original
       internal floppy.

2- Get the shuffle board and add an IDE controller (also by ICD).
Stuff the IDE drive into the 1000's case in place of the floppy
Now your floppy is only used to load in the kickstart and to
do your backups. You can get a 52Mb IDE drive from employee
purchase (PC4XR-BD) very cheap ($255 here in Canada) spread over
26 pay periods, it's less than a meal at the restaurant every
two weeks. The IDE controller is also very fast, with diskperf,
I got over 400K of transfer with 32K buffers. The test was with
a 40Mb Conner, with a Quantum, the results would be even better.

I know it's probably somewhere in this conference, but could you please
tell me an address/phone # for ICD and the cost of the "shuffle board"
    if you know it ?

    Thanks for your help.

The price for the ADide "kit" (shuffle board, ADide controller, cables,
software and bits) was $150 in Toronto. Mail order from the US would
    probably be a bit less.
