Conference hydra::amiga_v1

	It's been getting great press everywhere.  Even Rolling Stone
	magazine had a couple page article on the Video Toaster (a few
	months back) ...

    I liked Computer Shoppers coverage of the Toaster.  As a new video
    hardware for the MAC.
    
    No mention that the great Mac is nothing but a front end.
    
    
    
    

This is somewhat off the topic, but close enough...

I've received my demo tape of the Toaster, and I am duly impressed- both by the
Toaster's abilities and also by the creativity of Todd Rundgren's "Change
Myself" video (the song ain't half bad either).

I freely admit that I haven't really been considering a Toaster, but requested
the video out of curiosity and a desire to see Todd's video (on the basis of
the wild ravings of his devoted fans), but I'm pretty intrigued. My hardware
budget doesn't put me in the running for one right now, but maybe sometime...

PS: As regards the Computer Shopper article omitting mention of the Amiga- the
sad part is, most such articles are printed virtually word-for-word as
received from the manufacturer. The marketing of the toaster has already made
evident its intent to distance itself from the machine which made it possible.
Ironic that the first device to make the Amiga "credible" in the corporate mind
runs from it as fast as possible, ostensibly to avoid *losing* credibility.

Yeccch- no guts left in the world. This device can stand clearly in the light of
honesty and bear quite a few slings and arrows without losing a tad of market
share, IMHO. I wish the marketeers had half the dedication and vision of the
hardware designers!

    	NOT ACTUALLY A NEW RUMOR!
    	This has been around for awhile. Of course this would most likely
    kill the amiga. Even with the sale of toasters NewTek is seeing I 
    don't think they could buy CBM.(At least not all parts) Stop and think,
    for every toaster sold(profit to newtek) CBM is getting profit on the
    Amiga behind it.

    I don't think it's likely that NewTek will buy Commodore.  Commodore is
    a large company; where will NewTek get the money?  From selling Video
    Toasters?
    
    More likely is that NewTek will buy the right to produce the Amiga
    2000.

    In the latest Videomaker it reviews a tape called "Todd Rundgren
    Speaks". This is an excerpt from it:
    
    Todd Rundgren's music video, "Change Myself", appeared in February
    1991 to much fanfare in the music and video worlds.  Seems he did it
    himself, using four NewTek Video Toasters and ten Amiga computers.  
    Amigoids beware: he has some strong criticism for Amiga and Commodore. 
    A committed Mac-man, Rundgren found his forays into the Amiga world
    often frustrating and the Amiga world itself often "stupid."
    
    In spite of the technical shorcomings, this tape is full of good

    Rudgrens a jerk, and the article was wrong. He had ten toasters. If
    they knew what they were talking about(in that he had 14 systems)They
    would have said 14 amigas. He hates it so much he joined NewTek in a
    multiMedia venture. I think it's just sour grapes, He should have done
    it on his beloved Macs. I guess for all his expertise in computer
    science he had trouble with a two button mouse. Mac users are just
    that, Mac users. I'm tired of all this Amiga vs Toaster talk. Bottom
    line I can use my amiga anytime WITHOUT a Toaster. I don't know a
    Toaster owner that can say I can ues my toaster without an Amiga.
    At least not yet. Even without a Toaster the Amiga outshines the
    other two when it comes to video. Of course I know that somewhere
    a Mac user has 30,000 tied into his system, and compares it too
    a stock 2000 thinking he has it all.(his 30,000) would not compare to
    a 2000 with a toaster, unless he has one on his desk. I think most
    Mac users gag at the thought of having an Amiga of any kind on their
    desk, or should I say the thought that the Mac can't cut it .

Penn Gilette (of Penn & Teller) writes a column for one of the PC mags.
A few months ago he wrote about how great the toaster was and how
much it would revolutionize desktop-video.  Then he stated there was
one drawback, that it only ran in an Amiga.  He said, don't let that
scare you off, "it's just an Amiga.  It's not like buying a Mac."

At least when they showed a picture of him in front of his PC, you
could clearly see the Amiga2000 sitting in the background.

    Yes!  I wholly agree.  I think Newtek should be shot.  Not only is
    their dealer support terrible, but they completely ignore the fact that
    it's an Amiga!
    
    The only way Newtek will regain respect in my eyes, is if they flood
    the market with these "PC workstations" (what a pile of CRAP!) and then
    say "Whoa, everybody, look what your AMIGA can do!"
    
    Maybe then I'll like them again.
