5263.0. "Fast File System in WB2.0" by TROOA::KUPKE () Wed Dec 11 1991 08:52

    I just upgraded to WB 2.0 and was very proud of myself having done the
    whole thing in less than 2 hours. After running it for several days I
    decided to do a backup, format and restore as per instructions to take
    advantage of the new fast file system. Everything seems to work fine
    but I can not see any improvement in file performance. I have removed
    references to the old fast file system as per instructions. How can one
    tell if the new systen is in effect ? or was I expecting too much ?

    Thanks,

    		Dietmar.

5263.1Formatted disks?JAYMES::BELLWed Dec 11 1991 10:3310
    You might be expecting too much, if you followed the instructions
    right. As long as you have a Commodore-type SCSI 6 drive, all you had
    to do was back it up onto 2.0 formatted disks (that's important), then
    re-low level format your hard drive.

    GVP disks are real smart, too, their ROMS can handle any type of
    filesystem you want. But as for the back up (might be the problem),
    the disks have to be formatted in 2.0.

To check it, try "version dh0:" (or whatever your HD is called). That should
report the version number of the filesystem code that drive is running. If
it's 37.xxx, you've got the 2.0 code installed. It might take a slightly
different invocation of the version command than I listed, but the numbers
re right.

What tools did you use to do the backup/restore (I don't have the instructions
handy)? That might make a difference.

5263.3HD Backup WB2.0TROOA::KUPKEWed Dec 11 1991 13:175
    I used the backup program that is now standard with WB2.0. It works
    well and is straight forward in its user interface. It is not as fast
    as some other non CBM products but at least it is compatible with WB2.0
    and it was free(sort of).
