5242.1 | CPU Selection Screen Still In There | TLE::RMEYERS | Randy Meyers | Sat Nov 30 1991 19:41 | 16 |
| Re: .0
I've been meaning to enter a note about this. I got my Rev 7 Rom for
the A2620/A2630 last week. I was bummed when I tried to boot in 68000
mode and got only the boot device select menu.
However, the CPU selection menu still exits. Hold down only the menu
button while rebooting. You will get a screen that allows you to
pick between the 68000 and 68030 (or 68020, in my case).
The "secret" command line based monitor is still there. If you boot
with only the right mouse button down, and before releasing it type
a "M" (shift/m), you will get the command line prompt.
I wish they had written up this change on the one page sheet on installing
the ROM!

| Is it allawed(?) to duplucate those rom's?
If someone with the new rom's (say -07?) would read them using an
eprom-programmer and make the file public, we could all copy them and
program them ourselfs.
After all, it's an update to correct an 'error' they made, right?
Just an idea,
Frank

No! Commodore still owns the copyright, it's still illegal to make
copies.

| I wonder how DEC would feel if someone had that attitude about or
products, and roms. I'd say it would be highly unethicial, probably
criminal at best. Experiance tells me that code in roms is most often
of the company confidential type of info, and highly copyrighted. After
all it often this code that makes a product, moreso than the support
logic.

| Ok ok ok, forget I brought it up. As I stated, it could be that it
was't illegal. I never intended to make anyone do something illegal.
BUT! I did buy a 2630 so that it would be compatible to future
enhancements, no to see that it's about the only accelerator that
doesn't work.
And I still think commodore has to update the ROMs without proffit.
(now, what good would those ROMs be if you didn't buy their board?)
Just don't shoot me,
Frank

| I saw one come into System Eyes, and Randy scarfed it up right away.
To the best of my knowledge they did not order any more. BTW who have
the various people ordered thru ? AS for CBM being obligated to give a
free update, I feel this should be the case, but my dealer had to pay
to get the one he ordered, and I just paid 45.00 to go to rev 4.0 of
my GVP disk controller.

| Well, I got my -07 ROMs this weekend. [Yea!] Everything is working
fine, except I cannot get the 68000/68020 menu to show up. Holding
the right mouse button appears to have no effect at all, the system
goes ahead and boots anyway. Any ideas guys? I *need* this option
for a number of games to keep the munchkins appeased.
Yes, the mouse is working perfectly, etc. (I have a spare.)

| Is it just the right button, or both buttons? I use both, and
it works fine on my A2620.

| Earlier ROMs used both buttons, but Commodore apparently changed to
just the right button in the -07 release. Both buttons get the boot
device selection menu from 2.0 Kickstart. I can get that one fine,
but not the 2620 menu.

| Well, I believe we've identified why I can't get the CPU menu. It
seems that Memory Location ordered a dozen sets of ROMs some time ago.
For some reason, they received 2 dozen of the *low* ROMs only. So
they reordered the necessary hi ROMs to complete the sets. Meanwhile
Commodore had released the -07 version, so the set I got from TML had
mismatched -06 low and -07 hi versions. Very strange...
So now I'm (again) waiting for my A2620 ROMs.
If you've received a set of these ROMs from Memory Location recently,
you should verify that yours are properly matched. The part numbers
on both chips should end with -07, and you should be able to get the
CPU menu by holding down the right mouse button.

| Hi,
I've got some great news for everyone in the Netherlands (just me?)
I yesterday got my 2630-06 and 2091-6.6 rom by mail for *FREE*
Last week i sent in my original rom's and 2091 disk (made duplications
for own use though, couldn't live without me ami!) to Commodore
Nederland and they updated them..
I don't know if something like this exists in other coutries but i
certainly would give it a try.. (most shops around here charge $40 just for
the 2630-rom's!)
Ave,
Frank
P.S. now you see, the Dutch aren't that greedy! ;*)

The ROM's I received a month ago are -07. No wonder you received them
free!

| re: -1
All i want to do is run 2.04 from rom. For that i need rev -6 or higher
so 6 will do just fine for me..(unless ofcourse rev -7 offers GREAT
improvements)
Did you get it for free too?
(including an update for your 2091 (if you have one??))
I could be perfectly happy now! (if only i knew how)
Ave,
Frank
