5221.0. "ProPage V2.1" by SNELL::MELLITZ () Wed Nov 20 1991 08:25

    When I got home yesterday, sitting on the mail table was an unsolisitied
    updated of ProPage V2.1 from Gold Disk. Free of charge!

    The installation was simple. The only really new feature I see so far
    is the ability to print to a dot-matrix printer in landscape mode.

    It is suppose to be faster. I really didn't notice that but I've
    only taken a cursorly look.

    I think V2.1 does not need the stuff for the font cache.

    It seems to work with old documents created with V2.0.

5221.1Another Happy Camper2183::ESTABROOKJay Estabrook - DTN 264-5876Wed Nov 20 1991 12:0823
Yes, I too had a nice surprise when the package finally arrived. I HAD called
them a month or so ago, and was told that it would be coming, since there were
some things that they wanted to fix to go with AmigaDOS 2.0. And fix them they
did!!!

I had tried, using the PPage 2.0 version, to play with expanding the window that
PPage uses, by forcing it to use the Workbench screen, and then making WB be
both overscan and larger than the physical screen (via Overscan and Screenmode
preferences). With PPage 2.0, it simply would not allow changing the size of
the window; with 2.1, it works GREAT, so long as you have enough CHIP memory to
handle it (I had to go to a 2-color WB to try this out). I'm not sure if this
capability is present if using PPage's CUSTOM screen option, as I believe that
it would have to do its own SuperBitMap scrolling and such, and I don't think
it can/will.

I, too, have not really noticed any speed improvement, but it does no longer
need/use the old font cacheing mechanism, which saves some HD space, and also
speeds up screen painting when the font cache it DID have was too small to hold
much.

All in all, a VERY nice update, especially at the price!!! :-) :-)

    I've been using V2.01 beta. It automatically fixes files that are
    corrupt. That is probably true with V2.1.
5221.3I think this is newLODGE::LENDavid M. LenWed Nov 20 1991 13:264
    One thing that I noticed, that I believe is new with 2.1, is that if
    you choose the "Save" option on a new document, it pops up a requestor
    to ask for a location to save, rather than blindly saving it as
    Untitled to the current directory.
5221.4Still have drawing problemsCARROL::MELLITZWed Nov 20 1991 15:538
    They still have the problem of putting a container around a line. This is a
    problem if you are aligning a drawn box to lines with snap to grid on.

    I wonder if Prodraw has this problem too?

5221.5Recommended Agnus?SSDEVO::YESSEFri Nov 22 1991 16:257
	I'm going to take the plunge and purchase PP2.1 soon. My system
	is a stock 2000; would you PP users recommend I also upgrade
	my chip ram? Or can I get by with what I have, assuming
	"moderate" use of ProPage? (going to dos 2.04 also)

	Thanks,
	Keith Y.

    I have been using ProPage on 1.3 with 512K chip. I do keep a watch on
    the available chip. And don't usually have problems, except sometimes I
    get a hang on print.
5221.7RGB::ROSEMon Nov 25 1991 09:177
	PPage works with 512K of chip RAM, but it uses most of it. You shouldn't
run anything else at the same time. Also, you have to switch to a non-interlaced
display to print.

	By the way, the latest AW has an offer to upgrade to PP2.1 from any
DTP program on any platform for about $100.

5221.8Your Mileage May Vary2183::ESTABROOKJay Estabrook - DTN 264-5876Mon Nov 25 1991 11:4414
To conserve CHIP memory, and allow printing without having to change to a
non-interlaced screen, simply change the tooltypes of PPage to:

	SCREEN=CUSTOM
	INTERLACE=ON
	MODE=BW !! note: can't remember the right name, but set it
			!! to BW to get Black and White. The normal tooltypes
			!! probably set it to COLOR which will use 4 bitplanes,
			!! which is VERY expensive of CHIP memory.

I've been using these setting for years, and it's always worked for me... :-)
Of course, I don't do any documents that require color. Your mileage will vary.

    re: -1

    Yes, I too set the mode to Black and White. Not only does it save on
    Chip ram, the menus appear much faster also. The display doesn't
    look as nice in BW mode, but the menu speedup is worth it. I also set
    wireframe to speedup the display.
5221.10What the heckSSDEVO::YESSETue Nov 26 1991 14:217
	Good feedback...Since a Fatter Agnus goes for as little as
	$65 mail order, I might as well add it in. Reading this &
	other notes on the subject, it sounds like it's worth it
	if only to help keep the guru away. (I may use B&W mode, but
	plan to incorporate color in ProPage work.)

5221.11Fatter is as Fatter does2183::ESTABROOKJay Estabrook - DTN 264-5876Wed Nov 27 1991 12:5723
Got a 1MB Agnus installed yesterday, and decided to take ProPage out for a
spin last night... :-)

Setup WorkBench to interlace black-and-white with a dimension of 1400x1700, and
configured PPage appropriately (COLORMODE=BW, SCREEN=WORKBENCH, INTERLACE=ON)
and fired it up... Grabbed the sizing gadget in the lower right corner of the
PPage window and pulled down and right 'til it would go no further (actually,
PPage wouldn't quite go to 1700, but would expand the window when made slightly
less tall than 1700). Then I openned a document and set Magnification to 200%.
The ENTIRE 8.5x11 document was then visible by scrolling the screen around
using the mouse!! No pauses while PPage refreshed the screen! FANTASTIC!!

This technique seems quite useful for those people who tend to use a small font
which isn't QUITE clear at 100% magnification, and which makes editing
on-screen at that magnification difficult.

Note that this capability of PPage didn't appear (work) before its 2.1 release.
Note also that the size of the window which you can make in PPage is dependent
on the amount of CHIP memory available; working in just 2 planes of color would
DOUBLE the amount of CHIP needed for the same size window. My B&W window of
1400x1700 chewed up over 600K CHIP memory!

5221.12FREE Pro Draw w/Pro Page?? VERELL::BOAENSat Dec 14 1991 23:084
	Allegedly Gold Disk ads in AW refer to a free Pro Draw w/Pro Page 2.1.
Anyone know the details? Does it just come in the Pro Page 2.1 kit? I've got
Pro Page coming in from CSN next week and just heard about this.

    No! it is not in the 2.1 kit. I think you have to buy PPage, and then
    send in a copy of the reciept, and the reg card to get the Pro Draw
    package. I don't think you have to buy directly from Gold Disk to
    qualify. I like 2.1, and I just ordered a free update for Pro Draw,
    and advantage. I got the upgrade info from the new "News letter"
    Gold disk is sending out. I was glad to see that they are back into
    the practice of sending out a News, tips etc letter.
