5220.1 | Not freely distributable | NEWOA::MORAN | IT Management Services | Wed Nov 20 1991 08:01 | 11 |

RE -.1
Unfortunately, its not Shareware nor PD. I think its licenseware and is
only distributable to people who've bought the December issue of Amiga
Format. ie it costs you 3.95 pounds.
Shame,

5220.2 | | HEAVY::JAMIE | Thunder knows all things. | Wed Nov 20 1991 09:21 | 9 |
| Well that's a LOT cheaper than what Amiganauts were charging for it.
They were the original UK source for the package.
By the way, it's not the latest version of Octamed. The latest, V2,
has musical notation etc as well as the usual "soundtracker" style
interface...

5220.3 | Its a marketing ploy | XSTACY::PATTISON | Go to Falkirk | Thu Nov 21 1991 04:31 | 20 |

Yes, you are both right. This is V1.00B of OctaMED, and unfortunately
I'm not allowed to upload it for you all.
Its basically the same as previous versions (MED 3.1, 3.2), with
the added feature that eight tracks can be used for Amiga compositions.
The way this works (there are only 4 channels available) is by
mixing samples in real time. This means its pretty heavy on both
CPU and memory. There is also some distortion introduced by doing
this, but nevertheless its bound to be useful for demo making etc.
Before you all rush out to buy a copy... this requires 1Meg minimum
and won't work with Kickstart 2.0
To get version 2, you can send in your Amiga Format cover disk to
Amiganuts United and they will copy V2 onto it. (V2 contains some
score-editing features). The cost is 10.50 in EEC countries, or
13.50 to everyone else.

5220.4 | Not a good feeling. | ULTRA::BURGESS | Mad Man across the water | Thu Jan 16 1992 10:45 | 20 |
| re -< OctaMED >-
Its on FF-579, so I think its fairly freely re-distributable.
It comes with an unpack disk script which needs some editing.
It insists on unpacking to DF1 and formats the disk to clear it
totally, it unpacks the .lzh to it and copies a "custom" boot block.
{Virus_Checker dislikes the custom boot block, well, it says its
non-standard and offers to delete, learn or ignore it.} It then copies
various things from the c directory and overfills the floppy disk. I
deleted the printer drivers, figuring I wouldn't need them just to
try-drive it, but it crashed when started from work-bench. I guess it
wanted that custom boot block after all (-:
I don't trust that custom boot block (yet) or the bugginess
that lets it try to overfill a just re-formatted disk.
I KNOW ! I'm running 2.04 OK, I'll leave it alone until a 2.0x
compatible version comes along.

5220.5 | Bad Pal command on my copy | SHARE::DOYLE | | Thu Jan 16 1992 11:59 | 9 |
| The following statement in the start up sequence causes coniptions,
I believe it's "run pal" or some such,
It unpacked fine to my disk, and after investigating, the Pal command
was the culprit, I replaced the Pal command with my correct version of
Pal and it ran fine, (without the custom boot block).
I don't think WB2.0 likes the pal command, so I'd take it out and
set the screen for pal mode in preferences to run it.
