5208.0. "HD crash recovery?" by FSCORE::KAYE (where's my Kama Sutra pop-up book for zero-g) Fri Nov 15 1991 15:25
Harddrive crash scenario:
I tried to boot & got the old 'not a DOS disk'.
I tried QuarterbackTools and got 'bitmap invalid - sorry'. The 1st
partition (OFS - 4cyl) was fine, but my main partition (FFS) was dead.
I then re-PREPed the drive using the original partitioning & got the
same error (AMIGADOS Format wouldn't touch it either). So, i PREPed it
again & changed the partitioning. It seemed to work.
I ran AMIGADOS Format - OK, but a few retries
QuarterbackTools - no bad spots
Restored my 45 floppies & it lasted 4 days, before i got the same
error. I tweeked the partition again and did the entire game again,
but this time i said to park the heads after 3 seconds on inactivity.
I have run QuarterbackTools every day with no errors.
I can only guess that when i power off it occasionaly glitches the
drive and that PREP only really writes the data if it is different
than the original.

PS - 2090A with RD53 (ST225 died the same death, haven't tried it
again)

| I believe RD53 park themselfs on powerdown. ST225 do not however and you should
use PREP to specify parking after 3 sec.
