I've just purchased a GVP Impact Series II A500-HD+ 52Mb disk drive, nice unit. My question concerns the fan. Is it really needed, or is it overkill ? I believe other similar drives are available, some which even fit inside the A500 case, and they don't have fans whirring away in the background. If at all possible I'd like to disconnect the fan, but not if it cause the device to fail........ Thanks, Dave.

I've got the same unit, bought about a year ago but with a 40 meg drive. Just personal opinion, but I wouldn't disconnect the fan. Obviously GVP had a reason for it in the design. You could chance it, but I'd rather put up with the noise than chance drive failure due to heat buildup. I called GVP during my first few days of ownership and asked if something could be done about the fan noise as it was driving me crazy. Their response was essentially "we designed it with a fan to keep the unit cool". Like I've done, you'll probably just get used to it. (Comparing the noise to a VS2000 I once had, this GVP is quiet!). Your choice, but I'd suspect that disconnecting it would void the warranty. -Dom |
