5198.0. "X-11 and inet help" by SUBURB::MCDONALDA (Smoke me a kipper...) Wed Nov 13 1991 04:32

    After a little struggle, we finally managed to get a couple of copies
    of X Window System for the Amiga. I've installed the litte beastie and
    have encountered a little problem which I would appreciate some help
    on.

    When I execute xinit or invoke xamiga, all seems to go well until a
    requestor appears asking me to insert volume inet into any drive.
    Clicking on the cancel button eventually gets rid of the requestor, but
    the old Ami's screen 'flashes' once; thus indicating an error. The
    X-server appears to have run up fine, only problem is I haven't yet got
    enough memory to actually check this.

    Anybody know what this inet is and what should I assign it to? I've already
    tried assigning it to DEVS: as ipc.device is located there, but to no
    avail.

5198.1Do you have network HW/SW?TLE::YBOT::ASHFORTHWed Nov 13 1991 08:268
My first guess is that it's looking for an Ethernet card and/or TCP/IP software.
(I didn't think Amiga X supported DECnet, but I'm not positive.) It sounds from
your description like you may be running totally local (i.e., both client and
server), which would indeed mean you can run without net capability.

Keep the info coming, BTW- I'm more than a tad curious myself.

5198.2A bit more info...SUBURB::MCDONALDASmoke me a kipper...Wed Nov 13 1991 09:1315
    I am indeed trying to run the sever locally, currently just for the
    sheer hell of it until I can start my tests with IS telecomms.

    It is the X server which is asking me for the inet volume, I haven't
    got enough memory to fire up a client. BTW I am running the latest
    release from GfxBase is X-11 R4.

    XAmiga supports DECnet. There is a switch -decnet, which when set
    causes XAmiga to try and create DECnet sockets.

    I have TSSNET installed and ready to roll, once IS Telecomms are in a
    position to help my tests and once I have more memory; which should be
    by the end of this weekend.

    I run X11 on my 3000 with DECnet. The problem you are experiencing is
    because you are running the xinit as provided with the product. You are
    suppose to edit it to meet your system config and desired display
    resolutions.

    Specifically, the "-tcpip" switch is causing it. Try removing it and
    see if it goes away.

    Another note - If you'd like to save some disk space, you can delete
    the 100dpi fonts unless you are really running on a monitor setup that
    will provide that resolution.

    On my system, the xinit looks as follows:

    X11:bin/Xamiga.clr -decnet -i -w 704 -h 470 -fp
    					x11:fonts/misc,x11:fonts/75dpi -wm

    Note: The "clr" is for color.

    This is spelled out in the manual.

    P.S. I might have an old copy of the V3.2 release if anyone is
    interested. It didn't work for me because it didn't support DECnet.
    If you are running an amiga with the CBM ethernet and TCP/IP, send me email
    if you are interested.
5198.4Even when I just type Xamiga I get the request.SUBURB::MCDONALDASmoke me a kipper...Wed Nov 13 1991 10:476
    Keith,

    I'll give it a try, but I am getting the inet volume request even when
    I simply type Xamiga at a CLI (after assigning X11: and adding X11:bin)
