5183.0. "ToolManager" by DECWET::DAVIS (Mark W. Davis 206.865.8749) Fri Nov 08 1991 14:29

I finally got ToolManager v1.5 working last night. I now have hotkeys
and/or a tools menu item for my frequently used applications and a
couple of application icons on the workbench. Has anyone found a way
for ToolManager to inherit the workbench path upon startup?

BTW, there is another utility called Addtools, by SteveX (steve
tibbits), that will allow you to place items on the tools menu. It
doesn't give you the multitude of ways to start applications like
ToolManager but a shell started from the tools menu DOES inherit the
workbench path. Now to figure out how to use public screens to my
    advantage...

ToolManager is really neat. That combined with the built-in V2.0
features, and you have a REALLY usable Workbench. I find that I'm
spending less and less time at the CLI, and more time using
the various "show all" and "view by icon/name" to perform operations.

It's real nice to just grab and drop those icons to view text, pictures,
delete files, print files, etc, etc.

Steve (the ToolManager code isn't real pretty to look at, though...)

not sure this is related, but...

is there a way of changing a file's icon type from the WB? I have many
text files come up as TOOLs, and would like to change them such that
the default tool is MuchMore. But when I select "Info", I find I can't
    alter them.

From what I understand, you must do everything from toolmanager.config.
Once the icons are plastered onto the workbench you cannot get info,
nor snapshot them. I just set up a text reader application icon on the
workbench and drop a text file into it when I want to read. Mostly
I use toolmanager for hotkeys. It is a great application.

Make sure you have the toolmanager icon itself come up visable. I
don't recall offhand how to do this, but it's in the docs. Double click
on that icon. You can then edit each one of the applications you have
set up. Fairly nice interface too.

You can also have toolmanager add a "open toolmanager window" entry to the
tools menu. This menu entry does the samething as double-clicking the icon.
