5182.1 | maybe the other way | CIMNET::KYZIVAT | Paul Kyzivat | Fri Nov 08 1991 17:38 | 7 |
| Somewhere I saw mention of an adaptor to make somebodies AT keyboard clones
work on an amiga. So maybe you could go the other way and use an AT
keyboard on both.
I don't recall if I saw this here or in one of the rags.

| The ad was in a recent AmigaWorld. Basically, connector and box that
converted PC keyboard scancodes into Amiga codes so that you could
use a pc clone keyboard on your amiga.
If I remember right, the Memory Location in Wellesley had one on their
shelves a few weeks ago.

| My problem is that I want to go the other way, Amiga -> IBM, and I'm not
a hardware engineer.

5182.4 | what's the difference? | CIMNET::KYZIVAT | Paul Kyzivat | Fri Nov 15 1991 21:51 | 4 |
| It sounded like you just wanted one keyboard. What difference which
keyboard it is, as long as it has enough keys?

| Let's see, should I use the brand new 3000 keyboard belonging to my $5000+
computer which is also the computer that I do 100% of my work on and
has the ctrl key (and others) in the correct position, or the used IBM
(yech) AT keyboard belonging to the $200 system I'll be keeping in the
closet? Let's see; Amiga? IBM? Amiga? Tough choice ;-)
Remember; I'm only getting it to handle my voice phone line (the best
use for an IBM PC is as a dedicated piece of automated equipment rather
than as a computer ;-). I just thought I'd like to eliminate the need for
the AT keyboard as a matter of convience.
I'm sure this can be done.

5182.6 | Can you get used to a PC keyboard? | RTPSWS::ZIMMERMAN | | Sat Nov 16 1991 11:02 | 19 |

Quality shouldn't be an issue given the variety of PC keyboards you
can get these days. I've even seen one in the JDR catalog with a
built in calculator. They're all under $100, most under $70.
What I would wonder about is whether the PC keyboard has all of
the functions of the Amiga keyboard and whether I could adapt to
it. The review of the keyboard adapter (don't recall the name,
starts with K) that I read in AW said that all of the Amiga keys
were mapped to the PC keyboard and that people who the author
asked to try it out said that they could get used to the
different layout (just as we get used to the mapping of the VT
keys to the Amiga layout).
JDR also had an interesting A/B box that switched the keyboard
and the monitor at the same time. Looks like it was made for
people who had one monitor and one keyboard and two machines.

5182.7 | Does anyone know how to do this? | PAMSRC::NOCLUE::BARRETT | Another face in a red jumpsuit | Sun Nov 17 1991 09:52 | 20 |

Re: -.1 Thanks; I'll Check into that device (I was going to make one,
perhaps I'll just get that one and/or modify it).
I'm still a bit concerned though. I don't have pinouts for the
Amiga KB or the AT KB, so I'm not excited about just plugging it
in without knowing if it will blow up my KB or not. I've heard
that the devices that allow an AT keyboard to work on the Amiga
are more than just cross-wiring.
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this.

[Re: -.* Please; could we stick to the topic? I don't want to debate the
pros and cons of preferring one keyboard over another. Whether you agree
or not, I would like to use the Amiga keyboard on the AT, and the reason I
posted this topic was to check into how to do this and get a solution.]

Keith --
Did you ever get a resolution on the A2000/3000 keyboard -> IBM PC?
I am also interested in this configuration and am curious if you
ever found an adapter that could translate the scancodes...
