5181.0. "ROM switchers" by VMSNET::WOODBURY () Fri Nov 08 1991 00:08

	I just tried to install DKB Software's MultiStartII on my 6A Amiga
    500. It seems to be a reasonably nice unit electrically but it simply
    does not fit in the case mechanically. It's about a 1/4" too tall. As
    a result, you can't put either the RF shield or the KEYBOARD back in their
    proper position.

	A further problem is that it overlaps the 68000 socket so it will be
    incompatable with anything that needs access to that, like the ATOnce card.

	There may or MAY NOT be problems with other A500 motherboards or with
    A2000s. I've only got one machine to play with. Just be careful with this
    one.

	I was interested in it because I have a pair of AD HD 3.5" drives that
    don't work properly under 2.04 in HD mode and I have a fair amount of stuff
    archived on HD disks. I was lucky I didn't blow my 2.04 ROM with all the
    moving around. I just hope Ray at AMPEX Systems here in Atlanta will let
    me return it.

5181.1Another board...VMSNET::WOODBURYFri Nov 08 1991 14:2115
	Called DKB and the admited the problem was basicaly insoluable for
    the 6A motherboard. They were looking at redesigning it. Ray did allow
    me to return the board.

	I got a KickStart board from Utilities Unlimited of Oregon to replace
    it. It was less expensive than the MultiStartII board and a simpler
    design. Instead of a fancy timer that detected how long the reset keys
    were held down, it has a 3 position switch, and instead of a tower it has
    a 3-4" ribon cable and header. Finding a place to run the switch wires out
    of the case and a way to mount the switch was a bit messy but not
    impossible. (I used a hot glue gun to mount it on the left rear corner of
    the 500 case and ran the wires out the expansion port opening.) The switch
    seems to be on the power lead to the ROM so it should not cause too much
    in the way of RFI. Documentation is also a bit sparser than on the DKB
    board, but it did the job. Summary: This one works for me.
